Position Overview

Reports to: Coordinator of Individualized Services

Compensation: $18.90 per hour; biweekly payment; sign-on bonus available

Work Schedule: Full-time; Primarily Monday-Friday during the day, with occasional pre-scheduled weekend or evening commitments based on the needs of the individuals served.

Role Summary: This position is dedicated to delivering individualized support and services with a strong focus on personal choice for individuals with developmental disabilities. The role involves advocating for, guiding, and teaching individuals to express their preferences, develop daily living skills, integrate into the community, and maintain a safe and healthy living environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the health and safety of individuals at all times through appropriate care.
  • Assist individuals in evaluating their options and support them in developing problem-solving and coping strategies.
  • Accompany individuals to community events and various social, educational, vocational, and recreational activities, helping them to utilize community resources and engage with others.
  • Facilitate the development and maintenance of positive relationships between individuals and their peers, families, and community members.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, sharing observations regarding individual progress and reactions to new activities, while collaborating with colleagues for innovative ideas and approaches.
  • Instruct and assist individuals in daily living skills, including personal hygiene, nutrition, household management, meal preparation, and budgeting.
  • Timely prepare and submit documentation/notes for each activity for billing purposes.
  • Transport individuals using personal vehicles to scheduled activities and events (mileage reimbursement available).
  • Maintain effective communication with the individual's family, advocates, and significant others.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to provide diverse opportunities for individuals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Successful completion of the Agency orientation and training program.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License with a minimum of two years of driving experience.
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record to meet Agency insurability standards.
  • Reliable personal vehicle for business use.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs, and assist individuals with and without support.
  • Physical capability to respond safely in the event of a behavioral crisis.
  • Ability to operate personal and Agency vehicles.
  • Capacity to walk and stand for extended periods.
  • Some exposure to infectious diseases, hygiene issues, and various odors.
  • Able to tolerate outdoor conditions during seasonal activities.
  • Ability to operate mechanical devices utilized by individuals.

Sign-on Bonus Information:

Sign-on bonuses for Direct Support Professional positions are distributed in four equal payments at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and one year of employment:

$500 for per diem status (less than 30 hours per week)

$750 for part-time status (30-39 hours per week)

$1,000 for full-time status (40 hours or more per week)
