POSITION SUMMARY

The Product Safety and Compliance Engineer plays a pivotal role in ensuring that our consumer electronics meet U.S. and global standards for electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), intentional radiators, and hazardous substance restrictions. The scope of certification encompasses a diverse array of analog/digital signal processing and musical instrument products, including effects processors, audio amplifiers, computer interfaces, 2.4GHz wireless transmitters/receivers, guitars, external power supplies, and more. Reporting directly to the Director of Quality & Compliance, this role collaborates closely with development teams and project management throughout all phases of the product development lifecycle.

This Role will be hybrid based from our Calabasas office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a Product Safety and Compliance Engineer, candidates are expected to possess strong written and verbal communication skills, project management capabilities, and experience in navigating products through the certification process (from development to launch) for all applicable compliance requirements (i.e., Safety, EMC, etc.). Furthermore, candidates should have familiarity with compliance requirements for MME (Multi-Media Equipment) products - IEC/UL, CISPR 32/35, and experience guiding design teams to ensure products are crafted to meet compliance standards. Hands-on experience in pre-compliance EMC testing is highly desirable. In this role, you will:

  • Guarantee that all hardware products are safe, legal, and fully compliant with all global regulations.
  • Collaborate closely with development teams to ensure new hardware designs adhere to all relevant standards and requirements. Participate in design reviews with a focus on design-for-compliance, ensuring that compliance issues do not adversely impact product launch timelines.
  • Act as a subject matter expert regarding compliance requirements, providing essential guidance to design teams on the interpretation of these requirements.
  • Coordinate with testing and regulatory agencies to prepare and submit all necessary documentation and product submissions. Oversee submissions through the approval process and maintain all required documentation.
  • Identify specific language needed on packaging, labels, artwork, etc., to ensure worldwide compliance.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to ensure all chemical compliance requirements (e.g., RoHS, REACH, Prop 65, etc.) are fulfilled.
  • Maintain compliance technical files, provide advance notice of expiring certificates, and successfully achieve certification renewals without disrupting sales.
  • Keep a compliance matrix that identifies applicable standards and requirements for all countries.
  • Provide budgetary estimates for all compliance requirements and work with Sales and Finance to identify associated costs for obtaining compliance in specific countries.
  • Partner with Yamaha's corporate compliance group to stay informed of changes in global regulatory compliance requirements and proactively update design teams on any impending changes.
  • Manage compliance approvals for special projects (such as onboarding new distributors, modifying critical components in existing designs, integrating new external power supplies, etc.).
  • Develop compliance testing/certification strategies to optimize cost and efficiency.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

What You Bring:

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering; M.S. is a plus.
  • 5+ years of hands-on EMI/EMC/safety compliance testing and related engineering and documentation experience.
  • Direct experience in obtaining international certifications for hardware products.
  • Familiarity with various international standards and Nationally Recognized Test Labs (NRTLs), including: UL, CE, CSA, FCC, ETL, PSE, CCC, TUV, Nemko, INMETRO, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of the latest EMI/EMC/safety regulatory test requirements for both the U.S. and international markets.
  • Experience with environmental standards and regulations, including WEEE, RoHS, REACH, and TSCA, including a thorough understanding of the documentation required to meet these standards.
  • Experience working for a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory and/or a certification agency is advantageous.
  • Experience performing pre-compliance testing for MME products for EMC and IEC/UL is highly desired.

  • Salary Range is DOE $95,000-$115,000.

The posted pay range values provide candidates with guidance on annual base compensation for the position, exclusive of overtime and benefits-related compensation, over a range of qualifications that may fit hiring objectives. Yamaha Guitar Group will consider the individual candidate's education, work experience, applicable knowledge, skills, and training, among other factors, when preparing an offer of employment.
