Overview

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking candidates for TEMPORARY seasonal roles, with a focus on maintaining and enhancing trail systems. Employment duration will vary based on funding and environmental conditions.

Key Responsibilities

As a Maintenance Worker Leader (Trails), your duties will include:

1. **Leadership** - This role involves overseeing a trail crew. The incumbent must possess comprehensive knowledge of trail construction and maintenance practices, identifying current and potential maintenance issues. The leader will provide recommendations to the supervisor regarding work priorities, crew training, and equipment needs. Daily decision-making regarding workflow and task assignments is essential. Regular safety meetings will be conducted, particularly when starting new tasks or using specialized equipment. The leader is responsible for keeping team members and supervisors informed about hazards and compliance with safety standards.

2. **Rigging Operations** - The incumbent will perform and guide the crew in rigging tasks, which include planning, selecting, and installing weight handling gear. A thorough understanding of the strengths and limitations of rigging equipment is required, along with maintenance and repair of rigging tools.

3. **Carpentry** - This position entails leading carpentry projects, primarily utilizing heavy logs and rough-sawn lumber for the construction and maintenance of both historic and modern structures.

4. **General Maintenance** - The role includes supervising light maintenance activities on park trails, such as clearing vegetation, repairing trail markers, and maintaining trail integrity by removing debris and ensuring proper drainage.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Background investigation and favorable adjudication are mandatory.
  • Compliance with Selective Service Registration Act is required for male applicants.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is necessary.
  • A valid driver's license is required for operating government vehicles.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is expected, with a uniform allowance provided.
  • Overnight travel in backcountry settings may be required.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or meet specific educational criteria if younger.
  • Travel and relocation expenses will not be covered.

Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to lead and supervise effectively, particularly in complex trail construction and maintenance projects. This includes extensive knowledge of carpentry, masonry, and trail assessment, as well as the operation of relevant tools and equipment. Experience in rigging operations and the ability to communicate instructions clearly to team members are essential.

Volunteer experience will also be considered valuable in assessing qualifications.

Education

For Wage Grade (WG) positions, there is no educational substitution for experience.
