Westborough, Massachusetts, United States Ascend Elements Full time
Job Overview

Ascend Elements (AE) is at the forefront of transforming the production of lithium-ion battery materials through the establishment of a clean and sustainable supply chain utilizing recycled feedstock. Our innovative Hydro-to-CathodeTM technology synthesizes new cathode materials from spent lithium-ion cells with greater efficiency than conventional methods, leading to cost reductions, enhanced performance, and minimized greenhouse gas emissions. This results in cost-effective, high-performance batteries with reduced landfill waste, a cleaner manufacturing process, and a truly sustainable closed-loop circular battery economy.

We are seeking a Controls Engineer to contribute to our Automation team, which is responsible for the comprehensive design and optimization of process automation within our manufacturing facilities. This includes the handling, discharge, and disassembly of spent electric vehicle batteries, as well as the shredding and chemical processing of these materials into new battery cathodes. The Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team plays a crucial role in scaling our technology from demonstration plant levels to full production across various sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in process automation for capital projects, including the creation of technical specifications, vendor selection, and qualification.
  • Review and approve instrumentation and control system designs, overseeing factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), installation, commissioning, and process optimization.
  • Collaborate with engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms to effectively design and implement plant automation and data management systems.
  • Lead projects aimed at enhancing efficiency across multiple sites, modifying and troubleshooting process control systems to ensure continuous optimization and reduced downtime.
  • Work alongside the R&D team and contractors to deploy automation systems for new processes.
  • Coordinate with the Quality team on quality control data management initiatives.
  • Support production plant technical staff in achieving operational metrics through robust processes and quality systems.
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) and troubleshooting to address process control issues and product quality deviations.
  • Collaborate with IT teams and contractors to provide enterprise-level production data reporting and analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned that align with the role.
  • Travel requirements may vary, with potential travel up to 20% on average, increasing during plant commissioning phases.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or technical diploma in Electrical, Process Controls, or Chemical Engineering with relevant automation experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years in controls design, programming, and troubleshooting within industrial manufacturing environments.
  • At least 3 years of experience with PLC and Ignition SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with control system design for performance materials or similar manufacturing processes, along with the ability to interpret and generate engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Experience in control panel design and low voltage electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of Siemens and Allen Bradley programming is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in APQP tools (or equivalent), including FMEA, SPC, and design and process validation, as well as Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Demonstrated project management skills for capital equipment projects exceeding $300k.
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions based on experience and technical knowledge.
  • Proficient in MS Office tools, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with Delta V systems is a plus.
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Ascend Elements is an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
