Job Overview

This results in cost-effective, high-performance batteries with minimal waste, a cleaner manufacturing process, and a truly sustainable circular battery economy.

We are seeking a Controls Engineer to contribute to our Automation team, which is responsible for the comprehensive design and optimization of process automation in our manufacturing facilities. This includes the handling, discharge, and disassembly of spent electric vehicle batteries, as well as the shredding and chemical processing of these materials into new battery cathodes. The Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team plays a crucial role in scaling our technology from demonstration plant levels to full production across various sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in process automation for capital projects, including the creation of technical specifications, vendor selection, and control system design reviews.
  • Collaborate with engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms to effectively design and implement plant automation and data management systems.
  • Lead automation projects aimed at improving efficiency across multiple sites, modifying and troubleshooting process control systems to enhance optimization and reduce downtime.
  • Work alongside the R&D team and contractors to deploy automation systems for new processes.
  • Partner with the Quality team to manage quality control data effectively.
  • Support production staff in achieving plant metrics through robust processes and quality systems.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and troubleshooting to address process control issues and product quality deviations.
  • Coordinate with IT teams and contractors to provide enterprise-level production data reporting and analysis.
  • Perform additional duties as required by the position.
  • Willingness to travel as needed, with travel requirements varying based on project phases.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or technical diploma in Electrical, Process Controls, or Chemical Engineering with relevant automation experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years in controls design, programming, and troubleshooting within industrial manufacturing.
  • At least 3 years of experience with PLC and Ignition SCADA systems.
  • Proficient in control system design for performance materials or similar manufacturing processes, with the ability to interpret and create engineering drawings.
  • Experience in control panel design and low voltage electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with Siemens and Allen Bradley programming is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of APQP tools, including FMEA, SPC, and design validation, as well as Lean and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Strong project management skills for capital equipment projects exceeding $300k.
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions based on experience and technical knowledge.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, and AutoCAD.
  • Delta V experience is a plus.
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
