POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Control Systems Engineer plays a crucial role in delivering technical expertise related to process automation for our operational facilities. Reporting to the Control Systems Supervisor, this position is integral to the Operating Team at our refinery. The engineer will oversee a designated area, focusing on the daily oversight and resolution of issues pertaining to process automation applications and configurations. Utilizing cutting-edge technology in process automation and optimization, the engineer will enhance process safety and improve the economic viability of our refining operations. Working closely with unit operators and cross-disciplinary engineers, the Control Systems Engineer will maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize existing refinery systems. Additionally, they will monitor emerging technologies and collaborate with corporate refining specialists to shape future strategies and investments. This role operates on a day shift schedule, with options for 5/8's or 9/80's workweeks.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure the optimal performance of installed automation systems, enhancing stability, reliability, economic outcomes, and health, environmental, and safety (HES) performance.
  • Boost refinery profitability by maintaining an understanding of Product Control Targets, economic factors, and constraints affecting financial performance. Stay informed about future operational changes and equipment upgrades.
  • Support project initiatives with process automation expertise, including the design and implementation of new control or shutdown protocols, graphic modifications, testing of new control loops, and startup assistance.
  • Identify and implement advanced control solutions to maximize profitability and HES performance, developing strategies on Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
  • Enhance operator effectiveness by improving the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and Alarm Management systems.
  • Optimize alarm performance through continuous monitoring, reporting, tuning, and suppression techniques.
  • Assist Operations with process automation strategies, advanced control applications, and DCS/Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
  • Participate in incident investigations and contribute to Management of Change (MOC) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) processes.
  • Provide on-call support for process automation systems as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering is required, with a preference for Chemical or Electrical Engineering. (Degree must be obtained prior to starting the position)
  • A minimum of three years of experience in the refining or petrochemical sector is required.
  • Preferred experience includes two years in process automation.
  • Proficiency in DCS systems such as Experion PKS and/or Honeywell TPS is preferred; Emerson DeltaV experience will also be considered.
  • Familiarity with PLC systems such as Allen-Bradley and/or Schneider-Electric Triconex is preferred.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Travel requirements are less than 10%.
