POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Control Systems Engineer delivers essential technical assistance concerning process control for operational facilities. Reporting to the Process Controls Supervisor, this role is integral to process control functions as part of an Operating Team within our refining operations. The engineer will focus on a designated area, tasked with the daily oversight and troubleshooting of process control applications and configurations. Utilizing cutting-edge technology in process control and optimization, the engineer aims to enhance process safety and boost the economic viability of refining activities. Collaboration with unit operators and engineers from various disciplines is crucial to maintain, diagnose, and optimize current refinery assets. Additionally, the engineer will stay abreast of emerging technologies and work alongside corporate refining experts to shape future strategies and investments.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position operates on a day shift schedule, which may include 5/8's or 9/80's workweeks.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure the optimal performance of existing control systems, enhancing stability, reliability, economic efficiency, and health, environmental, and safety (HES) performance.
- Boost refinery profitability by maintaining awareness of Product Control Targets, economic factors, and constraints affecting financial performance. Stay informed about upcoming changes in operational conditions and equipment upgrades.
- Provide process control expertise for project initiatives, including the design and implementation of new control or shutdown protocols, updating graphics, and supporting the testing and commissioning of new control loops.
- Identify and propose new or modified advanced control solutions to maximize profitability and HES performance. Initiate, develop, and execute process control strategies on Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
- Enhance operator effectiveness by improving the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and Alarm Management systems.
- Refine alarm performance through systematic monitoring, reporting, tuning, and suppression techniques.
- Support operational teams with process control strategies, advanced control applications, and DCS/Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
- Participate as a lead or team member in incident investigations and engage in Management of Change (MOC) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) processes.
- Provide on-call assistance for Process Control systems as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline is required, with a preference for Chemical or Electrical Engineering (degree must be completed prior to employment).
- A minimum of three years of experience in the refining or petrochemical sector is required.
- Preferred experience includes at least two years in process controls.
- Proficiency in DCS systems such as Experion PKS and/or Honeywell TPS is preferred; experience with Emerson DeltaV will also be considered.
- Familiarity with PLC systems, particularly AB and/or Schneider-Electric Triconex, is preferred.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Travel requirements are minimal, less than 10%.
