Torrance, California, United States Divergent Enterprises Full time

Divergent Enterprises is at the forefront of technological innovation, having developed a comprehensive factory system known as the Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPSTM). This system leverages advanced machine learning to optimize the engineering, additive manufacturing, and flexible assembly of intricate vehicle structures and subsystems.

Our products, created through DAPS, stand out for their superior performance, cost-effectiveness, rapid customization capabilities, swift market entry, and scalability to meet high-volume production demands.

As a recognized Tier 1 supplier to leading global automotive manufacturers, Divergent Enterprises is expanding its reach to address critical needs in the Aerospace and Defense sectors.

We are dedicated to democratizing vehicle design and manufacturing, envisioning a future where small, innovative teams worldwide can deliver efficient transportation solutions with minimal capital and time investment.

The traditional automotive manufacturing model is both economically and environmentally unsustainable. Divergent Enterprises has pioneered a manufacturing approach that integrates software, additive manufacturing, and assembly technologies, significantly reducing the material, energy, time, and capital required to design and produce vehicles.

This transformation aims to shift the automotive industry from a capital-intensive model to one focused on innovation, while also dramatically lowering the lifecycle environmental impact of vehicles.

Over the past two years, our company has been recognized for its groundbreaking innovations, receiving accolades such as the Frost & Sullivan Innovation of the Year and the inaugural Petersen Innovation in the Automotive Industry awards.

Your Role:

As an Additive Manufacturing Applications Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing our production system by evolving and refining tools that support 3D printing, build file preparation, and optimization.

We are committed to transitioning the Divergent 3D production system from conventional manufacturing methods to advanced 3D printing technologies utilizing new materials and techniques.

We seek a forward-thinking and innovative engineer who will contribute to shaping the future of manufacturing 3D printed automotive structures and components.

Your Goals:
  • Provide design insights for Additive Manufacturing to collaborate with engineering teams in creating optimized components for our complex, multi-material vehicle structures.
  • Lead projects from inception to completion by applying Design for Additive Manufacturing principles to customer applications.
  • Demonstrate self-sufficiency in making critical engineering decisions on assigned projects.
  • Collaborate with engineering, software, and manufacturing teams to understand process constraints and offer design inputs for enhanced printability and tool development.
  • Advance techniques for support structure optimization, with opportunities to contribute to our patent portfolio.
  • Enhance our distortion and error reduction efforts to ensure part tolerance accuracy.
  • Continuously seek improvements in support material reduction, part packing density, powder egress, and build success rates.
  • Evaluate and recommend software tools to achieve production objectives.
  • Optimize 3D build layouts and part nesting to enhance printer productivity.
  • Adhere to established procedures and processes while contributing to their development where necessary.
  • Prepare build files for 3D printing using provided CAD files.
  • Generate build time estimates to support program planning and execution.
  • Create standard engineering drawing documentation in accordance with ANSI/ASME Y14.1 while applying GD&T principles.
  • Provide ongoing feedback for continuous improvement of internal process workflows.
What You Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Additive Manufacturing, or a related field.
  • 3-4+ years of experience utilizing CAD (NX or Solidworks) and CAM (Magics or AM Studio) tools for build preparation in support of 3D printed metal component design and production.
  • Current, in-depth experience with process simulation software such as Magics, Simufact, Netfabb, or 3DSIM.
  • Extensive experience in developing fully integrated applications for Additive Manufacturing, with a preference for candidates with Automotive, Aerospace, and Defense experience.
  • Knowledge of metallurgy, including Aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, Titanium, and nickel-based alloys.
The Extras:
  • Previous programming experience in Python, C, Matlab, or other object-oriented languages.
  • Experience with computer-aided robotic path development.
  • Applied engineering experience through college programs (FSAE/Formula Student programs are a strong plus).
What You'll Get:
