Position Summary:

The Private Equity Associate will engage extensively in multiple facets of the private equity sector, encompassing manager and fund evaluation for StepStone's advisory services, alongside diligence responsibilities for our asset management divisions, including co-investment and secondary market practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate within a team to identify and conduct thorough evaluations of selected private equity fund managers.
  • Analyze private placement memorandums (PPMs), financial statements, and investment performance metrics.
  • Interpret financial analyses provided by target fund managers, including investment track records, and prepare valuation assessments on private entities using various methodologies.
  • Review marketing and supporting documentation from prospective fund managers to pinpoint critical value drivers and areas requiring further scrutiny.
  • Conduct reference checks and personal interviews as part of the manager evaluation process.
  • Present findings and recommendations to the investment team and the Firm's Investment Committee.
  • Monitor the performance of existing fund managers and underlying portfolio companies; prepare for and engage in meetings with assigned managers, and perform ongoing evaluations.

Involvement in Co-Investment and Secondary Market Diligence:

  • Source, screen, and conduct due diligence on private equity secondary and direct co-investment opportunities.
  • Engage with fund managers and portfolio company management teams to perform in-depth portfolio and asset-level assessments.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative research, along with financial modeling and analysis on companies and assets across various stages, industries, and geographies.
  • Collaborate with external parties, such as fund managers and investment bankers, as well as internally at StepStone, to perform due diligence and identify new opportunities.
  • Prepare and present due diligence reports and investment committee documentation.
  • Formulate opinions on diverse investment opportunities and effectively communicate them both verbally and in written formats, with the capacity to defend your position in a collaborative environment.
  • Assist in the negotiation and coordination of deal closing and structuring processes, as well as post-investment monitoring.

Qualifications:

  • Strong academic background (university degree and GPA).
  • 2-4 years of experience in investment banking, consulting, or private equity.

  • Exceptional quantitative abilities, including financial modeling and analytical skills for evaluating investment opportunities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong understanding of risk/reward dynamics and the capacity to exercise sound investment judgment.
  • Self-motivated with a creative approach to problem-solving and research.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).

Compensation: Salary Range - $100,000 - $110,000
