POSITION SUMMARY:

The Food Service Specialist plays a crucial role in the preparation and delivery of meals for young children, ensuring high standards of quality and nutrition in a large-scale food service environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare meals in accordance with established menus, accommodating dietary restrictions and individual needs.
  • Verify the accuracy and freshness of food deliveries, ensuring proper storage practices.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of meal counts, inventory, and food orders.
  • Engage in menu development and planning activities.
  • Adhere to safety and sanitation standards as mandated by state and federal regulations.
  • Serve balanced meals and snacks, ensuring compliance with recommended serving sizes.

INTERACTION WITH CHILDREN:

  • Implement family-style dining to encourage children's decision-making skills.
  • Present food in a manner that is manageable for young children.
  • Promptly serve meals as children arrive at the dining area.
  • Provide age-appropriate utensils to facilitate self-feeding.
  • Observe and assess children's acceptance of various food items.

PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT:

Collaborate with parents in:

  • Menu planning initiatives.
  • Recruiting volunteers for food service support.
  • Promoting nutrition education for families.
  • Conducting home visits as needed.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper dishwashing techniques.
  • Exhibit safe operation of kitchen equipment.
  • Provide nutrition education to children and families.

NUTRITION ASSESSMENT:

  • Review and reinforce positive family eating habits.
  • Monitor and accommodate special dietary needs.
  • Prepare concise reports on nutrition assessments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To be successful in this role, candidates must possess the following:

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of large-scale food preparation methods and safety standards.
  • Familiarity with modern kitchen equipment and food service practices.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good physical health and understanding of sanitation regulations.
  • Experience in food preparation or related volunteer work is preferred.
