Job Title: Assistant Director of Executive Communications

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Executive Communications Specialist to join our team at The Pennsylvania State University. As an Assistant Director of Executive Communications, you will play a critical role in shaping and amplifying the President's public image and voice, directly advancing key leadership priorities at one of the world's leading public research universities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Fulfill the communication needs of Penn State's President and other executives in the Office of the President.
  • Write and edit speech-related materials for various settings and public appearances.
  • Craft a range of communication materials, including background information, bulleted remarks, talking points, and fully scripted speeches, tailored to specific needs.
  • Ensure speeches and public statements align with the president's voice, style, and vision, and are factual, accurate, and consistent in messaging.
  • Develop detailed briefing materials for stakeholder meetings, speeches, forums, and other events, requiring thorough research and fact-finding.
  • Collaborate with Strategic Communications team members to stay informed on topics or areas where the President may be asked to comment or present.
  • Work closely with key areas across the University to understand key messages and objectives, incorporating relevant data, information, and talking points into communications.
  • Coordinate with event organizers to prepare comprehensive briefing documents for the President, including backgrounds and interests of invited guests, location of events, purpose of and significant factors about events, and audience expectations.
  • Draft scripts for video messages, write op-eds, and develop quotes and statements as needed.

Education and Experience:

Minimally requires a bachelor's degree or higher plus six or more years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A degree in communications, English, journalism, public relations, or a similar discipline is preferred. Prior experience with executive communications or speechwriting, experience working in higher education, and familiarity with the current state and challenges facing higher education are preferred.

This is a hybrid or potentially fully remote position that requires occasional evening and weekend hours. The salary range for this position is $68,102,300.00, and the University offers a comprehensive benefits package.
