Position Overview: The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the Speech Language Pathologist by delivering essential speech and language services. This position encompasses clinical, educational, documentation, and treatment-related tasks, all conducted within the framework of responsibilities and care plans established by the supervising Speech Language Pathologist or physician.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implements elements of a speech and language program as outlined in the treatment plan created by a supervising SLP, adhering to state regulations and the physician's directives.
  • Identifies self as an SLPA to families, students, patients, and educational staff.
  • Aids the SLP in conducting speech, language, and hearing screenings without providing clinical interpretations.
  • Supports the SLP during student assessments, excluding the administration and interpretation of tests.
  • Assists the SLP with bilingual translation during screening and assessment activities, limited to non-interpretative roles.
  • Maintains timely and precise documentation of student progress, reporting findings to the supervising SLP.
  • Programs and instructs on the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
  • Shares information with students, families, and staff regarding feeding strategies as directed by the SLP, in accordance with state regulations.
  • May modify educational materials and equipment to facilitate intervention and meet student needs.
  • May serve as an interpreter for non-English speaking students and families.
  • Provides services under the supervision of the SLP for individuals who do not speak English and English-language learners.
  • May assist with administrative tasks, such as preparing materials and scheduling activities, as directed by the SLP.
  • Ensures cleanliness and maintenance of equipment used in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Reports any treatment reactions or changes in student conditions to the supervising SLP and designated clinical personnel.
  • Maintains effective communication with the district and other personnel involved in student care to ensure cohesive support for the outlined care plan.
  • May participate in formal care conferences, parent meetings, and interdisciplinary team discussions only in the presence of the supervising SLP.
  • Assists the supervising SLP in research initiatives, training sessions, public relations, and marketing efforts.
  • Provides information to emergency response teams regarding individuals with communication and/or swallowing disorders.
  • Advocates for early identification and intervention strategies.
  • May present preventive information to at-risk groups regarding communication disorders.
  • Adheres to HIPAA and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regulations.
  • Actively engages in required supervision by a SLP to ensure quality care for all individuals served.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a SLPA program with an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders.
  • Successful completion of at least 100 hours of supervised fieldwork or its clinical equivalent as mandated by state and/or contractual requirements.
  • Current certification or licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant in the applicable state.
  • Compliance with accepted professional standards and practices.
  • Preferred: One (1) year of prior experience as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.
  • Adherence to all relevant professional standards of practice.
  • Completion of Amergis' Competency program.
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray if necessary.
  • Current health certificate as per contract or state regulations.
  • Fulfillment of all federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to the job site.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey information to supervisors, colleagues, and clients; proficiency in English is required.
  • Required computer proficiency.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
