Position Overview: The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Speech Language Pathologist by delivering essential speech and language services. This position encompasses various clinical, educational, documentation, and treatment-related tasks while adhering to the responsibilities outlined in the treatment plan established by the supervising Speech Language Pathologist and/or physician.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement components of a speech and language program as directed in the treatment plan created by a supervising SLP, in accordance with the physician's care plan and state regulations.
  • Identify oneself as an SLPA to families, students, patients, and educational staff.
  • Assist the SLP with conducting speech, language, and hearing screenings without providing clinical interpretations.
  • Support the SLP during student assessments, excluding the administration and/or interpretation of tests.
  • Facilitate bilingual translation during screening and assessment activities, limited to non-interpretative roles.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student performance, reporting findings to the supervising SLP.
  • Program and instruct the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
  • Share information with students, families, caregivers, and staff regarding feeding strategies as developed by the SLP, in accordance with state practice regulations.
  • Adapt educational materials and equipment to meet intervention needs.
  • Serve as an interpreter for non-English speaking students and families.
  • Provide services under the supervision of the SLP for individuals who do not speak English and English-language learners.
  • Assist with clerical tasks, such as preparing materials and scheduling activities, as directed by the SLP.
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of equipment used in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Report any treatment reactions or changes in student conditions to the supervising SLP and designated clinical personnel.
  • Maintain effective communication with the district and other personnel involved in student care to ensure coordinated efforts supporting the treatment plan.
  • Participate in formal care conferences, parent meetings, and interdisciplinary team discussions only in the presence of the supervising SLP.
  • Support the supervising SLP in research initiatives, training sessions, public relations, and marketing efforts.
  • Provide necessary information to emergency response teams for individuals with communication and/or swallowing disorders.
  • Encourage early identification and intervention activities.
  • Present primary prevention information to groups at risk for communication disorders.
  • Adhere to HIPAA and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regulations.
  • Actively engage in required supervision by a SLP to ensure quality care for all individuals served.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a SLPA program with an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders.
  • Completion of at least 100 hours of supervised fieldwork or equivalent clinical experience as mandated by state regulations.
  • Current certification or licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant in the relevant state.
  • Compliance with accepted professional standards and practices.
  • Preferred: One year of prior experience as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.
  • Adherence to all relevant professional standards of practice.
  • Participation in and completion of Amergis' Competency program.
  • Completion of TB Questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray if applicable.
  • Current health certificate as per contract or state regulations.
  • Fulfillment of all federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Successful completion of new hire training relevant to the job site.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively convey information to supervisors, colleagues, and clients; proficiency in English is required.
  • Proficiency in computer skills.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
