Our culture is driven by happiness, passion, and commitment, making us one of the leading hospitals in the nation as recognized by U.S. News & World Report.

If you are eager to contribute to groundbreaking research, we encourage you to explore this exciting opportunity.

Position Summary

As a Computational Neuroscience Researcher, you will operate autonomously while collaborating closely with the Principal Investigators, Dr. Costas Anastassiou and Dr. Ueli Rutishauser, within the Department of Neurosurgery and alongside other research scientists.

Your role will be pivotal in advancing our understanding of human brain function across various spatiotemporal dimensions.

The primary focus of this position involves establishing computational simulations and data analysis workflows based on both slice and in vivo brain physiology in humans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and execute biophysical simulations utilizing an established computational framework that facilitates the simulation of reconstructed, interconnected, and biophysically realistic human neurons.
  • Analyze both simulated and experimental data employing advanced statistical methods to elucidate structure-function relationships.
  • Correlate computational results with experimental observations to derive biophysical principles underlying high-level brain functions.
  • Investigate how cellular, cell type, and circuit-level functions manifest in the extracellular field in humans.

Additional Duties
  • Assist in the preparation of grant proposals, though not responsible for securing funding.
  • Publish and present research findings in peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences as an author or co-author.
  • Develop, adapt, and implement innovative research techniques and protocols.
  • Analyze, interpret, summarize, and compile research data.
  • Conduct routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout the training period.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment and instruments.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

In collaboration with theoretical and experimental colleagues, you will design, implement, and conduct simulations of human neurons at both single-neuron and network levels.

Your contributions will also extend to the development of computational frameworks (simulation and data analysis) and address scientific inquiries pertinent to the systems under study.

Engage in related projects focused on human pathophysiology and neurotherapies.

Regularly prepare written and oral reports, maintaining clear communication with supervisors, team members, and external collaborators.

Qualifications

Education:
Doctorate (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in a field directly related to research specialization is required. A PhD in Computational Neuroscience, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Bioengineering, or a related discipline is highly preferred.

Experience and Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on research projects defined by the Principal Investigator.
  • Acquire comprehensive technical and theoretical knowledge of the research project and objectives during the postdoctoral appointment.
  • Proven aptitude for executing experimental protocols and procedures, including meticulous data collection, analysis, and maintenance of specialized equipment.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and equipment maintenance.

Department-Specific Experience and Skills:
  • Strong foundation in scientific computing.
  • Experience in Computational Neuroscience is preferred; however, candidates with backgrounds in Computational Physics, Applied Mathematics, Biophysics, and related fields will also be considered.
  • Experience with parallel computing and proficiency in high-level programming languages such as Python or Matlab is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with in vitro and in vivo electrophysiological monitoring techniques and analyses.
  • Ability to meet demanding timelines and deliverables in a collaborative setting.
  • Strong publication record and experience in collaborative research.
  • Demonstrated independent thinking and adaptability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform moderate lifting, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods. Capable of reading papers and online documents, operating standard office equipment, and exercising the physical ability and perspective acuity necessary to fulfill essential job functions.
