Position: Research Fellow in Neuroscience
The successful candidate will join the Lahiri Laboratory, which investigates the relationship between acute systemic illness and cognitive performance.
The laboratory employs animal models that replicate the acute inpatient setting to investigate the mechanisms behind the well-established high incidence of cognitive decline following acute hospitalization.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Research Fellow, you will:
- Independently design and conduct experiments.
- Maintain meticulous experimental records and collaborate with the Principal Investigator to analyze results.
- Interpret, summarize, and compile research data.
- Operate and ensure the upkeep of laboratory equipment.
Department-Specific Duties:
Animal Surgical Area:
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of surgical surfaces and equipment.
- Adhere to all institutional policies regarding animal care.
- Dispense pharmaceuticals according to established protocols and manage supplies responsibly.
- Perform advanced surgical techniques including intubation, mechanical ventilation, and vascular catheterization in rodent models.
- Collaborate with imaging specialists to obtain advanced physiological imaging.
- Execute stereotaxic surgeries and various injection techniques.
- Utilize innovative histological and imaging techniques, including microscopy.
- Conduct routine biomedical experimental protocols such as immunohistochemistry and neuronal cell culture.
Qualifications:
Education:
PhD in Neuroscience or a closely related field is required.
Experience and Skills:
The ideal candidate will:
- Work autonomously on research initiatives under the guidance of a mentor.
- Gain in-depth technical and theoretical knowledge relevant to the research project during the post-doctoral tenure.
- Possess technical expertise in areas such as neurological, cardiac, and pulmonary physiology, as well as molecular and cellular biology.
- Have experience in microvascular animal surgery with a focus on critical techniques.
Physical Requirements:
The role necessitates the ability to:
- Handle small laboratory animals.
- Stand or sit for extended periods.
- Utilize laboratory equipment, including microscopes.
- Lift a minimum of 20 pounds.
