Baltimore, Maryland, United States STScI Full time
Job Overview

Are you interested in a pivotal role that enhances our understanding of the cosmos?

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) serves as a premier science and operations hub for NASA's leading observatories. We are currently looking for a Principal Engineer specializing in AWS Cloud Security Automation & Systems (CACS) to join our team dedicated to NASA's flagship Space Telescope missions, which are transforming our comprehension of the universe. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents to comply with ITAR regulations.

In this position, you will spearhead initiatives for cloud security automation and utilize DevOps methodologies along with CI/CD pipelines to establish comprehensive security measures and monitoring systems for AWS cloud applications and environments that support our space observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope, and the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman). Roman is set to launch in the near future and is anticipated to produce 20 PB of data over five years.

The data generated by Roman will primarily be processed in the Cloud, complemented by a Science Platform hosted in the Cloud that will facilitate groundbreaking scientific research by providing extensive access to data, computing, and software resources.

Additionally, STScI manages the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST), which houses data from over 20 missions. In this role, you will collaborate with diverse teams to design, implement, and uphold secure cloud architectures, automate security workflows, and ensure adherence to industry standards and best practices. Your proficiency in AWS cloud security, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), DevOps, and SecDataOps principles will be crucial in supporting Roman and enabling exceptional scientific advancements through these innovative telescope programs.

This role allows for remote work with occasional onsite requirements. Candidates must be willing to relocate to our local market. This position mandates U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency to meet ITAR compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The CACS engineer will collaborate with software developers, security engineers, and DevOps professionals to act as the technical lead.
  • You will play a vital role in the Cloud engineering processes.
  • Develop and manage the security systems for the Cloud in AWS.
  • Proactively identify risks, vulnerabilities, and potential threats within our cloud and container infrastructures.
  • Work in partnership with engineering, IT, and other security teams.
  • Foster and maintain constructive relationships with internal stakeholders to identify and implement solutions that enhance the team's impact.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in roles such as Software Developer, System Development Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, or DevOps Engineer, with at least 7 years focused on Cloud Security Automation or Cloud DevSecOps.
  • Expertise in AWS Cloud Security and Automation.
  • Experience in Automated Incident Response.
  • Knowledge of DevOps principles and Automated Security Testing within CI/CD.
  • Proficiency in Security Monitoring and Logging.
  • Understanding of Security Best Practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Security - Specialty or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer are advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies, including knowledge of blue-green deployments and canary releases.
  • Experience with security frameworks such as CIS AWS Foundations and NIST 800-53, along with risk assessment and compliance reporting.
Note: Additional relevant education or experience may be considered in lieu of stated qualifications.

Compensation will be based on education, skills, and experience.
