Job Description

The Bilingual Medical Assistant is primarily responsible for scheduling appointments for new and existing patients through inbound and outbound calls, gathering and evaluating patient needs, authorizing insurance benefits, and coordinating referrals. This individual actively contributes to a shared goal model within and across ABQ Healthcare 2 You to achieve coordinated, high-quality patient- and family-centered care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Schedule patient appointments for consultations, treatments, and follow-up visits.
  • Provide accurate, detailed information to patients regarding the time of the patient's scheduled arrival and any other directional information needed; take appropriate action in responding to questions from patients.
  • Confirm the patient's insurance provider and either obtain prior authorization or communicate the need for prior authorization to appropriate parties as needed.
  • Effectively utilize clinical knowledge when determining if an appointment is consistent with the diagnosis/indications indicated by the provider.
  • Ensure patient information, appointment history, referrals, lab follow-up, phone calls, and consultations are accurately and completely documented in the EMR system.
  • Completes pre-procedure phone calls and confirms appointment times with patients via telephone.
  • Check in/out patients, collect payments.
  • Complete vital signs, input information in the EMR system.
  • Calls pharmacies or insurance to follow up on prior authorizations and medication refill.
  • Assist clinic providers with patient education; interpret language barriers as needed.
  • Maintain patience and professionalism.
  • Comply with all rules, regulations, and procedures for HIPAA, OSHA, or any other state, local, or federally-mandated compliance programs.

Requirements:

  • Medical Assistant Certificate is preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of work experience as front office administration, medical scheduler, or similar role in the healthcare industry.
  • Knowledge and understanding of insurance plans, benefits and coverage, medical terminology, and patient billing are preferred but not required.
  • Bilingual; able to read, write, and speak Spanish and English proficiently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and web-based technologies.
  • Proven verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with demonstrated customer service orientation.
