Sanctuary for Families is a premier service provider and advocate dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking, and related forms of gender-based violence. Each year, we empower countless individuals and families to transition from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive array of services. Our organization offers a variety of holistic services designed to assist survivors in rebuilding their lives post-abuse, while actively working to eliminate gender violence through three primary strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are accessible across multiple locations throughout New York City.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Counselor will deliver ongoing, trauma-informed counseling services to adult survivors of domestic violence, trafficking, and other forms of gender-based violence. The role involves assisting clients in managing their trauma, comprehending the effects of gender-based violence on their lives and their children's lives, and guiding them towards economic stability through case management, advocacy, and referrals to relevant organizations as necessary. This position offers the opportunity to work in a supportive, team-oriented environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct evidence-based assessments and psycho-social interviews for adult survivors of domestic violence, trafficking, and other forms of gender-based violence.
- Provide comprehensive, trauma-informed individual and group counseling services utilizing trauma and strengths-based perspectives to assist clients in processing, coping, and healing from their experiences.
- Facilitate safety planning, crisis intervention, advocacy, case management, and referrals to related services as required.
- Prepare affidavits and provide testimony for immigration and other legal matters.
- Conduct outreach and training related to trauma and gender-based violence for community organizations and institutions.
- Maintain accurate case records and utilize internal database systems to track client services and outreach activities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- License or limited permit required to provide therapy/counseling.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, engaging with professionals across various disciplines, including domestic violence advocates, housing specialists, attorneys, and community agency staff.
- Experience and familiarity with social services addressing issues related to gender-based violence are strongly desired.
- Understanding of trauma, violence prevention, and victimization issues.
- Familiarity with public benefits and housing systems in New York City is advantageous.
- Fluency in English is required; proficiency in additional community languages is strongly preferred.
Work position: Full-time; Salaried-Exempt
Work schedule: Currently Hybrid; must be able to meet job location schedule obligations.
