Purpose of Position:

As a Pediatric Trauma Support Specialist at NYC Health + Hospitals, you will play a vital role in developing and maintaining a child life program throughout Kings County Hospital. This program aims to provide developmentally appropriate support to the emotional, social, and psychological needs of our pediatric patients and their families, minimizing their stress and fear during hospitalization.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support children and their families by using various tactics to help them understand the medical process and procedures.
  • Develop age-appropriate strategies to minimize trauma and increase understanding of medical diagnoses through treatment plans using therapeutic play, education, preparation, and activities that promote growth and development.
  • Advocate for the special needs of children and their families.
  • Help children and their families process and cope with medical situations.
  • Provide information, support, and guidance to parents and family members.
  • Collaborate with the Pediatric healthcare team to coordinate and manage care.
Requirements:
  • A Baccalaureate Degree from a college recognized by the University of the State of New York with at least twelve semester hours in Child Psychology, Elementary School Education, Child Development, or Social Group Work.
  • Four years of experience in nursery school teaching, kindergarten teaching, or working with groups of children in a home, school, or other setting.
  • A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
