Position Overview

This role is designated for a certified pharmacy technician within the Veterans Health Administration. Pharmacy technicians at this level are expected to guide and educate junior technicians in the operational environment. The technician will support the pharmacist in delivering exceptional care and prompt service aligned with the mission, vision, and objectives of the Veterans Health Administration and its Pharmacy services. Responsibilities include managing all tasks related to inventory management, distribution, and restocking.

Key Responsibilities

Core duties include but are not limited to:
  • Precisely interpret, prepare, and fill prescriptions with the correct medications and medical supplies for pharmacist verification.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in work areas, ensuring all stock and equipment are properly stored and that surfaces are free from dust and debris.
  • Accurately fulfill prescription requests for various wards utilizing Automatic Replenishment reports.
  • Ensure timely processing of all prescriptions.
  • Guarantee that medications and supplies are stored securely in compliance with established guidelines, including those for high-risk and controlled substances.
  • Document expiration dates in the automatic prescription dispensing system upon receipt.
  • Respond to inquiries from pharmacy and non-pharmacy staff regarding medication distribution and identify potential therapeutic issues, alerting the pharmacist as necessary.
  • Perform duties of lower-grade technicians as required.
  • Assist senior technicians as needed.
  • Adhere to all regulations, directives, policies, and procedures of the Veterans Health Administration, Medical Center, and Pharmacy.
  • Maintain national certification with PTCB or ExCPT.
  • Engage in performance improvement initiatives within the pharmacy.
  • Complete all mandatory training in a timely manner.
  • Possess working knowledge of equipment specific to the role, including laminar flow hoods and necessary supplies for compounding sterile products.
  • Assist in testing for airborne particulates and microbial presence to ensure compliance with cleaning protocols.
  • Keep accurate records of repacking that meet regulatory standards.
  • Conduct inventory and restock emergency trays as needed.
Work Schedule: Rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Conditions of Employment

  • Selected candidates will undergo a urinalysis for illegal drug screening prior to appointment.
  • Selective Service Registration is mandatory for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.
  • Probationary period may be required.
  • Background/security investigation will be conducted.
  • Completion of an online onboarding process is necessary.
  • Pre-employment physical examination is required.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory.
  • Compliance with the COVID-19 vaccination program is required.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Certification from PTCB or NHA.
Experience: One year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the lower grade level of GS-07.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions, stand, walk, reach, stoop, and lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Capacity to adapt to changing environments and workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and maintain focus on tasks to provide optimal service.
