About the Role

The Policy and Legislative Affairs Specialist plays a pivotal role in supporting the External Affairs Department of the DC Public Charter School Board. This specialist is responsible for promoting and defending the policy interests of the DC PCSB and public charter schools, working closely with various DC government entities such as the DC Council and the Deputy Mayor of Education.

Core Responsibilities
  • Government Relations: Stay abreast of legislative and policy developments at the DC Council, State Board of Education, Executive branch, and Federal level.
  • Speechwriting, Messaging, and Storytelling: Assist with writing testimony, briefing memos, hearing preparation, and oversight materials for the DC Council.
  • Network Building & Strategic Partnerships: Foster relationships with key legislative staff and community groups.
  • Reputation & Issue Management: Monitor and record public conversations in hearings, community meetings, working groups, and online platforms.
  • Reputation Management: Conduct media monitoring and distribute written materials.
  • Advocacy & Policy Influence: Conduct research and draft policy briefs to support advocacy efforts.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Collaborate with members of the External Affairs Department to support their work streams.

Competencies and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, or education field.
  • Two to three years of related work experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of government relations and/or political experience, ideally in local politics.
  • Ability to find and evaluate useful information related to education policies or related topics.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Deep passion for equity in urban public education and a belief that an excellent school is equitable.
  • Ability to work on time-sensitive materials within the given timeline.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is estimated to be between $70,898 and $85,885 per annum. DC PCSB offers a comprehensive benefits plan covering 100% of the employee's insurance premium.
