Establish a successful Government Affairs Director, State Policy position at the Investment Company Institute (ICI), driving policy goals and strategies in state and local governments.

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Government Affairs Director, State Policy to lead our efforts in advancing legislative and policy objectives at the state level. Reporting to the Chief Government Affairs Officer, this role involves monitoring public policy developments, advising senior management, and representing ICI before state officials and organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement legislative and policy strategies primarily at the state and local levels of government.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of financial services issues, federal legislation, and public policy concerns relevant to ICI and its membership.
  • Represent ICI and its member companies before state officials, outside organizations, and NGOs.
  • Evaluate pending legislation affecting Institute members and develop recommendations for senior management.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with state government officials, including Governors' Offices, State Legislators, and Attorneys General.
  • Collaborate with ICI departments to advance our legislative agenda and secure objectives.
  • Assess the need for outside consultants and resources to support our state-level advocacy efforts.
  • Cultivate relationships with staff from other organizations sharing legislative interests and coordinate joint efforts when appropriate.

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field and 5-7 years of experience as a state lobbyist, consultant, or in a similar role.
  • Strong bipartisan connections in Republican and Democratic-led states and their legislative bodies.
  • A proven track record of advancing important issues through state-level advocacy.
  • Relevant consulting or government affairs experience.
  • Thorough understanding of state legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Experience working with Governors, State Legislators, Attorneys General, and other state officials on financial services issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team of professionals.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strategic planning experience and ability.
  • Advanced people skills, including the ability to work in an action-oriented environment.
