Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy Job Opportunity

The Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Staff Attorney to join our team in the Murray Trial Office. As a Staff Attorney, you will play a critical role in representing criminal defendants in District Court cases, conducting client interviews, and maintaining accurate records of case facts.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about helping the underprivileged and vulnerable in their communities. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional planning and organizational skills, be self-directed, and comfortable working with a defense team that includes other attorneys, investigators, alternative sentencing workers, and office administrative legal staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent criminal defendants in District Court cases with integrity and professionalism.
  • Conduct thorough client interviews and maintain accurate records of case facts.
  • Research and write clear, concise motions.
  • Obtain knowledge of the case through discovery and investigation to provide advice to clients.
  • Develop a theory of the case consistent with the facts and the law.
  • Will to try appropriate cases.

Requirements:

  • Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) (limited certification of admission to practice), SCR (attorney participants in defender or legal services programs), SCR (supervised practice), or SCR (practice pending admission).
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.

Working Conditions:

  • Duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings.
  • Travel is required.

Probationary Period: This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS.
