The Planning and Development Department is currently looking for a Construction Compliance Specialist.

As a City of Jacksonville employee, you will enjoy 12 paid holidays and a personal leave day each year. This position involves administrative duties related to the examination of construction plans for residential, commercial, and industrial projects to ensure adherence to relevant building codes. The role requires a solid understanding of construction regulations, architectural and structural drafting methods, and the ability to evaluate proposed designs and plans using specialized skills acquired through training and experience. Effective communication skills are essential for advising on necessary adjustments to non-compliant construction plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and assess construction drawings, plans, and specifications for compliance with building codes.
  • Calculate and confirm engineering designs and associated permit fees.
  • Notify applicants of any structural discrepancies and provide guidance on required corrections.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding building code compliance.
  • Operate a motor vehicle as needed.
  • Exhibit proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Competencies.
  • Perform related duties as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Familiarity with building construction codes and standard specifications, along with architectural and structural drafting techniques.
  • Understanding of construction designs, plans, and permit processes.
  • Knowledge of applicable building construction and zoning regulations.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Capability to read and interpret construction drawings and diagrams.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Valid motor vehicle operation skills.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of five (5) years of combined education, training, or experience at a technical or professional level in construction and inspection, including at least one (1) year of relevant experience.
Licensing/Certification Requirements
  • If not already certified by the State of Florida as a Building Plans Examiner, you must apply for a provisional State of Florida Certificate within one month of appointment.
  • A valid Florida Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Must qualify for and maintain a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.

  • The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
