The Tustin Police Department embraces a community policing philosophy and comprises approximately 102 sworn officers. Officers have the opportunity to engage in various police functions, including Patrol, Investigation, Gang Reduction, Field Training, K-9, Motors, Bike Patrol, Professional Standards & Training, and School Resources.


Selection Process:
To progress through the selection process, candidates must successfully complete the following components:
  • Physical Agility Exam – Pass/Fail
  • Oral Board Interview
  • Background Investigation and Polygraph Examination
  • Interview with the Police Chief
  • Psychological and Medical Examinations (upon conditional offer of employment)

Successful candidates will be placed on an employment eligibility list, which remains valid for one year. The selection process typically spans 6-9 months.


Important Considerations:
A thorough background investigation and polygraph will be conducted for all eligible candidates. Recent drug use, theft, or other illegal activities may disqualify candidates. A pre-employment medical and psychological evaluation, along with a drug screening, will be required upon a conditional offer of employment.

Selected candidates will initially be appointed in a non-sworn capacity while attending a POST certified Basic Police Academy. The curriculum includes coursework mandated by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training and/or the local Police Academy Advisory Committee.

Upon fulfilling all departmental, state-mandated, and academy requirements, including graduation from the Police Academy, candidates may be considered for promotion to the sworn position of Police Officer.

Once appointed as a sworn Police Officer, candidates must successfully complete the Department's field training requirements (approximately 6 months) within an 18-month probationary period.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled in a POST certified Police Academy or have graduated from one within the last six months.
  • Age: Must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Physical Condition: Must be in excellent physical shape, capable of performing all tasks required of a Tustin Police Officer as determined by a physical agility test, medical examination, and psychological evaluation.
  • Authorization to Work: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Background: Must possess good moral character with no felony convictions or crimes of moral turpitude and be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation.
  • License: Must hold a valid California driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Language Proficiency: Must have a fluent command of the English language in both oral and written forms.

The role requires physical stamina, including prolonged sitting, walking, reaching, twisting, and turning, as well as the ability to lift, carry, drag, pull, and push objects and individuals weighing at least 165 pounds. Candidates must also be able to stand for extended periods, run for long distances, and maintain composure under stress.
