Role Summary:
This role is dedicated to providing English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to students from kindergarten through 12th grade who are enrolled in various school districts in the region.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of second language acquisition, linguistics, and the methodologies for teaching English to non-native speakers, while being sensitive to cultural differences in educational settings.
2. Organize and oversee the administration of screening assessments and state English language proficiency evaluations to accurately gauge the language proficiency levels of ESL students, ensuring appropriate placement in instructional programs.
3. Maintain a structured schedule for student instruction, ensuring punctuality and adherence to designated timeframes at each school. Any schedule modifications must receive prior approval from an ESL Administrator.
4. Develop and implement daily lesson plans that foster educational growth and language development, aligning with the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards and state academic guidelines. The educator will also integrate both formal and informal assessments into the curriculum, which will be systematically recorded.
5. Document collaboration efforts with subject area teachers through a collaboration log. ESL educators are responsible for timely completion of all necessary documentation, including mileage reports, time sheets, teaching schedules, and professional development requests.
6. Engage in collaborative communication with school personnel to ensure adherence to the policies set forth by the school principal or designated representative. As a vital member of the instructional team, the ESL teacher will participate in collaborative planning, decision-making, and discussions regarding assigned students.
7. Deliver ESL instruction to Limited English Proficient students in a manner that promotes the development of English language skills, addressing their language proficiency, literacy development, and academic language competence, while providing support for cultural integration and ongoing assessment of student progress.
8. Maintain open communication with parents and guardians regarding the student's educational program and progress, being mindful of language and cultural nuances.
9. Pursue professional development opportunities to enhance instructional effectiveness, actively seeking innovative teaching strategies and best practices in pedagogy.
10. Foster proactive communication with ESL administration and staff, contributing to the overall effectiveness and development of the ESL program.
Required QualificationsEssential Qualifications:
1. A valid ESL Program Specialist certificate from Pennsylvania is required.
2. A valid Pennsylvania teaching certificate in Elementary K-6 and either English 7-12 or Communications 7-12, or Reading Specialist K-12 is required.
3. Prior experience in teaching ESL or at the elementary or secondary education levels is preferred.
4. Strong organizational skills, initiative, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
5. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
6. A self-motivated, cooperative, flexible, creative, and responsible approach to work.
7. Proven ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team.
8. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and a willingness to explore and utilize new technologies.
