Job Overview

The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Education, Social Work & Psychological Sciences is in search of a Field Mentor for the Institute for Urban Education. This role is integral to a grant-supported initiative aimed at attracting, training, and nurturing effective educators for urban environments.

We welcome applications for a 0.80 FTE, non-tenure track position within the Institute for Urban Education. The IUE is dedicated to equipping and assisting teachers in Kansas City urban partner districts, focusing on culturally relevant pedagogy, restorative practices, and social equity.

Key Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will provide guidance to aspiring and novice educators in alignment with the mission and objectives of the IUE. Responsibilities will encompass:
  • Acting as the primary liaison for the Master of Arts in Teaching program, engaging with prospective and current students as well as university personnel.
  • Mentoring and coaching aspiring and novice educators with an emphasis on culturally responsive teaching, restorative practices, and social equity.
  • Collaborating with student teachers through co-teaching models, workshops, and constructivist methodologies.
  • Facilitating communication between the university and educational institutions.
  • Coordinating with school district representatives regarding the placement of MAT students and provisional certification details.
  • Participating in faculty advisor training sessions, meetings, and events.
  • Assisting in recruitment initiatives for the IUE and MAT, including the development of recruitment strategies.
  • Gathering data and generating evaluation reports related to IUE activities.
  • Serving as a liaison for the IUE in community scholarship programs.
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with local school districts, including HR directors, administrators, instructional coaches, and mentor teachers.
  • Contributing to the Institute for Urban Education through service-learning initiatives.
  • Advancing the objectives of the Institute for Urban Education, the Teacher Education Program, and the School of Education.
  • Potentially teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in education.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • A Master's degree from an accredited institution in education or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of five years of successful teaching experience.
  • A minimum of three years of successful experience working with historically underserved and culturally diverse student populations.
  • Current or prior P-12 teacher certification is mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as an instructional coach at the middle or high school level.
  • At least one year of experience leading professional development for educators is encouraged.
  • Demonstrated teaching proficiency in elementary/middle school mathematics and/or science.
  • Recent experience working with student teachers.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to educational equity and social justice.
  • Familiarity with the Kansas City educational landscape.
