Job Title: Executive Director

About the Role:

The Executive Director (ED) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Writers in Residence is responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial health of the organization. They will lead a passionate team, oversee program development, and work closely with the Board of Directors to fulfill the organization's mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Strategy:
    • Develop and implement strategic plans that align with the mission and goals of the organization.
    • Provide visionary and operational leadership to staff, volunteers, and stakeholders.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation.
  • Program Management:
    • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.
    • Ensure programs are effectively addressing community needs and achieving desired outcomes.
    • Build and maintain partnerships with artists, community organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Fundraising and Financial Management:
    • Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies, including grant writing, donor cultivation, and event planning.
    • Prepare and manage the organization's budget, ensuring financial sustainability and transparency.
    • Oversee financial reporting, audits, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Board Relations:
    • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors, providing regular updates on organizational activities, financial status, and strategic direction.
    • Assist in the recruitment, orientation, and development of board members.
    • Implement board policies and decisions, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Community Engagement and Advocacy:
    • Represent Writers in Residence in the community, building relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, policymakers, and community leaders.
    • Advocate for the arts and social justice issues at local, regional, and national levels.
    • Enhance the organization's public profile through effective communication strategies.
  • Human Resources:
    • Recruit, hire, and manage staff and volunteers, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
    • Implement professional development opportunities and performance evaluations.
    • Ensure compliance with employment laws and organizational policies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in arts administration, nonprofit management, social justice, or a related field (Master's preferred) OR GED plus 5+ years experience in the nonprofit space, criminal justice system or equivalent institutional background.
  • Preferred 5 years of experience in a leadership role, preferably in the arts or social justice sector.
  • Proven track record in fundraising, including grant writing and donor relations.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Passion for the arts and a deep commitment to social justice.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to drive organizational growth and impact.
  • Must have a general understanding of issues facing the juvenile justice system or willingness to educate oneself.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Applicants with lived experience in the justice system or outstanding understanding of the criminal and juvenile justice system.
  • A few years of management experience.
  • A few years of financial oversight experience.
  • Broad, diplomatic communication style for different audiences.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Experience with a small organization.

Location:

Applicants must reside in the state of Ohio, preferably in the greater Cleveland area. This is a hybrid role requiring occasional travel to juvenile facilities for programming and events in the local community with key partners. Applicants will allocate between 5-10% of their time for travel per year.

Compensation:

Applicants will receive a competitive salary commensurate with their experience. They will also receive a benefits package that includes travel reimbursement, hybrid work schedule, 15 days of paid time off, and professional development opportunities.
