The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is seeking an Advanced Journey Mechanic for Rural ARFF Operations to assist in maintaining essential transportation services.

Key Responsibilities:


Professionally service and maintain a variety of heavy machinery utilized in the construction and upkeep of secondary roadways and rural airstrips. This includes, but is not limited to, motor graders, loaders, dump trucks, roller compactors, sand spreaders, backhoes, and tractor-trailer units.

Additionally, oversee the maintenance of light-duty vehicles that support the construction and maintenance efforts in the area.


This advanced journey-level mechanic role requires the ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain a diverse range of heavy-duty equipment for the State Fleet.

Proficiency in computerized diagnostics and the capability to repair both electronic and mechanical systems is essential. The incumbent must effectively resolve complex equipment issues using various techniques and methods.

In both shop and remote environments, the incumbent will perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a wide array of heavy machinery with differing components and diagnostic needs.

Examples of equipment include motor graders, loaders, various truck types, snow blowers, and sanders, often from multiple manufacturers and spanning a wide range of model years.

The incumbent must possess a foundational understanding of equipment components to facilitate service and accurately diagnose unspecified problems.


The incumbent must, at a minimum, be capable of diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying the following systems: transmission and drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems (including fuel injection systems), hydraulic systems, and braking systems (including air), as well as electrical systems for both light and heavy-duty equipment.

Working Environment:
This position is located in a remote area, with some travel expected to maintain equipment in various locations. Travel may include day trips and overnight stays.


In isolated mechanic stations, the incumbent will also be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining light-duty automotive equipment using electronic diagnostic tools.

Special Notice: A Class "A" commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required for this position.
Steel-toed boots or other approved protective footwear are necessary to prevent injuries from dropped or fallen objects.
Knowledge of firearm usage and ammunition handling is required.
Ability to perform Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) duties in support of Part 139 is essential.
Training in Emergency Trauma Treatment (40-hour course) and ARFF training (including a medical evaluation and fit test for self-contained breathing apparatus) is mandatory. Training in Managing Wildlife Hazards at Airports will be provided after hire. Proficiency in operating heavy equipment is required.

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED

This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.


Hire approval is conditional upon the proposed appointee successfully obtaining a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 days of hire, and signing an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY

Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test.

According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.


TOOL ALLOWANCE
Employees in this position are required to provide their own hand tools. Employees in this position will be paid a monthly tool allowance determined by their position. Your manager should review this with you after you are hired.
