Job Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Supervisory Museum Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Collections Care and Personnel Management unit, you will be responsible for assisting the Chief of CPU in the preservation, conservation, and exhibition of artifacts from the National Collections.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement work schedules and assign tasks to team members based on project requirements and individual skills.
  • Review and approve personnel actions, including promotions, reassignments, performance plans, and disciplinary actions.
  • Supervise and accomplish the movement of historically significant artifacts from storage for restoration, preservation, study, or exhibit.
  • Design and construct cradles, dollies, and other supports necessary for safe handling, movement, relocation, and storage of artifacts.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure accurate and timely completion of tasks and projects.
Requirements
  • Experience supervising staff, interns, volunteers, and contractors in a museum environment.
  • Experience handling aeronautical and space artifacts, including moving and storing artifacts using equipment such as forklifts, gantries, pallet jacks, dollies, and vehicles.
  • Experience packing and crating artifacts for transportation, considering their fragility, size, and material composition.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
