POSITION SUMMARY: The Research Technician II plays a crucial role within the Department of Pharmacology, Addiction Science, and Toxicology (PHAST) at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Under the guidance of the Principal Investigator, this position is integral to research initiatives examining the effects of various substances, including lipids, alcohol, and other drugs of misuse, on cerebral artery and brain ion channels.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare necessary solutions and materials, which includes the dissection of cerebral arteries from rodents and the extraction of oocytes from Xenopus laevis, for various experimental studies such as electrophysiology and imaging.
  • Assist in surgical procedures involving rodents and amphibians.
  • Conduct animal euthanasia, tissue collection, and blood sampling from rodents.
  • Manage breeding and maintenance of mouse colonies, including genotyping.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping for breeding and compliance with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) standards.
  • Formulate LB agar plates and purify plasmids under supervision.
  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment, which includes cleaning glassware and surgical instruments, autoclaving, and inventory management of chemicals.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory policies and protocols.
  • Perform additional related tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience or a related biological science is required. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: A combination of relevant college coursework and work experience totaling four (4) years is acceptable.
