Job Overview

Sesame Workshop is on the lookout for a seasoned and meticulous Director of Finance and Accounting. This pivotal role entails supervising all financial and accounting functions within the corporate finance division, leading a team of professionals, and safeguarding the accuracy of financial data. The perfect candidate will possess extensive experience in NetSuite administration and will oversee our month-end closing procedures, audit preparations, budgeting, and financial reporting. This position will primarily report to the AVP Assistant Controller while also liaising with the Sr. Director of Financial Reporting. The role offers a hybrid work model, requiring in-office attendance twice a week, with the flexibility to work remotely on other days.

Key Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership

a. Direct and mentor a team of professionals in Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, payroll, and accounting.

b. Offer guidance, training, and development opportunities to enhance team skills and career progression.

2. Financial Operations

a. Supervise daily accounting functions, ensuring precise and timely financial information.

b. Manage the month-end closing process, including the preparation and review of journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements for corporate accounting.

c. Ensure adherence to GAAP and other regulatory standards.

d. Support other accounting departments with financial transactions.

3. NetSuite Management

a. Assist the AVP with NetSuite administration, overseeing system maintenance, upgrades, and user support.

b. Enhance NetSuite functionalities to streamline financial processes and reporting.

c. Participate in NetSuite enhancement initiatives.

d. Educate and support team members on NetSuite best practices.

4. Audit and Compliance

a. Prepare audit documentation during annual audits.

b. Ensure compliance with internal controls and identify areas for enhancement.

c. Aid in the development and maintenance of financial policies and procedures.

5. Budgeting and Reporting

a. Assist in formulating annual budgets and quarterly forecasts.

b. Evaluate financial performance against budgets and forecasts, providing insights and recommendations to senior management and stakeholders.

c. Generate ad hoc financial reports as needed.

6. Headcount Oversight

a. Monitor and manage the financial aspects of headcount planning and budgeting.

b. Collaborate with HR and department leaders to ensure accurate headcount reporting and forecasting.

7. Process Optimization

a. Identify opportunities for process enhancements and efficiencies within finance and accounting functions.

b. Lead and engage in finance-related projects and initiatives to boost overall financial performance.

Qualifications

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • 5-7 years of progressive experience in accounting roles.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience with NetSuite NFP.
  • Prior experience in both accounts receivable and accounts payable.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management capabilities.
  • Experience with month-end closing, audit preparations, budgeting, and financial reporting.
  • Robust analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid work setting.

Additional Skills:

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and queries.
  • Experience with financial software such as IBM Planning Analytics, Concur, and ADP.
  • Strong change management skills, including the ability to lead through transitions and influence others.
  • Experience in managing large-scale finance projects or system implementations.
  • Background in the Non-Profit sector.
