Primary Responsibilities
The Mechanical Equipment Technician will operate under general oversight, focusing on the assembly and installation of various equipment types according to manufacturer guidelines, specifically for transit light and heavy rail vehicles. This role involves physical activities such as lifting, climbing, and maintaining various postures, and may require work during weekends or holidays. All tasks must align with industry standards, supervisory guidance, and established company protocols.
Key Duties:

  • Adhere to a predetermined timeline for the installation of equipment on transit vehicles, including systems related to propulsion, trucks, pneumatic supply, brake control, air conditioning, and other components necessary to meet manufacturer standards.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments throughout the installation process.
  • Evaluate and inspect completed installations to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Accurately document findings in designated Test Reports, which will be included in the Car History Books for each finished vehicle, noting torque values, part numbers, and serial numbers.
  • Implement modifications to rail vehicles as instructed by engineering and supervisory personnel.
  • Interpret engineering schematics, manuals, and work orders effectively.
  • Maintain detailed records of work completed and materials utilized, adhering to specified safety protocols.
  • May engage in welding and burning tasks as required.
  • Employ and care for hand and power tools relevant to the trade.
  • Keep precise records of tasks performed and materials consumed.
Required Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a light rail or transportation setting is preferred.
  • Experience in the installation of both electrical and mechanical systems.
  • A solid understanding of assembly practices and procedures is essential.
  • Strong mathematical skills are required.
  • Familiarity with mechanical torque, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems is necessary.
  • Possession and maintenance of a basic hand tool set is required.
  • Experience with precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and pie tapes is essential.
Work Environment:
  • Experience in maintaining a safe working environment is crucial.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within diverse and dynamic team settings.
  • Capability to read and comprehend technical drawings, alongside strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and perform well under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Attention to detail regarding quality control and customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Self-motivated with the capacity to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Educational Requirements:
  • A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A college or technical trade school degree/certificate is preferred.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating in English is necessary.
Physical Requirements:
  • This role requires frequent walking, occasional standing, sitting, and the use of hands for handling tools and controls, as well as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • The ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds is essential.
Work Environment:
  • The position is situated in a warehouse or production setting, with occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and typically loud noise levels.
  • Some tasks may require exposure to manufacturing areas with specific safety requirements.
