Core Purpose:

The role involves executing skilled tasks related to the repair and enhancement of various electronic and electro-mechanical systems and components utilized in transit light and heavy rail vehicles. The technician operates independently, adhering to industry standards, company protocols, and supervisory guidance. Additionally, the technician may engage in on-site diagnostics, response, and adjustments of operational vehicles.

This position specifically focuses on testing, troubleshooting, and repairing the electronic and electro-mechanical systems and components found in transit revenue vehicles.

Under general supervision, the technician performs skilled testing, troubleshooting, repairs, and modifications on a range of electronic and electro-mechanical equipment and components present in heavy and light rail vehicles, along with related tasks as assigned.


Main Responsibilities:
  • Conducting scheduled testing and adjustments of electronic, electro-mechanical, and mechanical systems on transit vehicles, including those related to propulsion, train control, pneumatic systems, brake control, air conditioning, communication systems, door mechanisms, lighting, and auxiliary electrical supplies.
  • Diagnosing and performing primary performance verifications on these systems, replacing components as necessary to meet manufacturer specifications.
  • Accurately documenting all findings in designated Test Reports for inclusion in the Car History Books for each completed vehicle.
  • Implementing modifications to rail vehicle electronic and electro-mechanical systems as directed by engineering and supervisory personnel.
  • Collaborating with engineering and production teams regarding system modifications.
  • Utilizing diagnostic testing equipment and precision measuring tools during the execution of duties; may also involve fabricating new testing equipment for novel components and systems.
  • Performing secondary disassembly and repair of electronic and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Verifying the performance of newly modified systems or equipment.
  • Working closely with transit vehicle mechanics to troubleshoot issues and conduct primary repairs.
  • Interpreting diagrams, engineering drawings, manuals, schematics, and work orders.
  • Measuring, testing, and inspecting completed work to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Documenting work performed and materials utilized while adhering to specified safety protocols.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience, preferably in a light rail or aviation setting.
  • Familiarity with low and high voltage (VDC), medium voltage (VAC), and relay logic.
  • Experience with testing equipment such as digital multimeters, pneumatic gauges, and current probes.
  • Possession and maintenance of a basic hand tool set is required.
  • Proficiency in precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and pie tapes.
  • Knowledge of electrical crimping and mechanical torque techniques.
  • Experience in maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in diverse and fast-paced team settings.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college or technical trade education is preferred.
  • Capability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently under pressure and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend work orders and procedures.
  • Capability to diagnose and perform various electrical and mechanical adjustments following provided procedures.
  • Commitment to quality control and customer service.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
  • Physical ability to lift between 30 to 50 lbs.

Physical Demands:
  • Regular walking is required; occasional standing, sitting, and using hands for handling tools or controls.
  • Frequent lifting/moving of up to 40 pounds, with occasional lifting/moving of up to 75 pounds.

Work Environment:
  • This position operates within a warehouse/production setting, with occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and a typically loud noise level.
