About Us
At Toyota Research Institute (TRI), our commitment is to enhance the quality of human life through innovative technologies. We are at the forefront of developing advanced tools and capabilities that elevate the human experience. Our expert team is dedicated to pioneering research in Energy & Materials, Human-Centered AI, Human Interactive Driving, and Robotics.
Our Vision
We aim to make general-purpose robots a reality through the implementation of large-scale embodied AI.
The Challenge Ahead
We foresee a future where robots can assist with everyday tasks such as household chores and cooking, support the elderly in maintaining their independence, and allow individuals to engage more in their preferred activities. Achieving this vision requires robots to operate effectively in unpredictable and unstructured environments. Our mission is to explore the necessary steps to develop versatile robots capable of performing a wide range of tasks in human-centric settings with minimal oversight. To this end, we are collecting extensive datasets of physical interactions from various sources, including both robots and humans, and training large generative foundation models using this data alongside diverse modalities such as language, video, and audio.
Our Team's Objective
We aspire to transform the domain of robotic manipulation, enabling long-term dexterous behaviors to be efficiently taught, learned, and refined over time in varied real-world settings. Our team possesses deep expertise across simulation, perception, control systems, language processing, vision, multimodal learning, and generative modeling. Our success is measured by the enhancement of robotic capabilities, and we are strong advocates for open research. Our guiding principle is to achieve fundamental technological advancements in creating robots that can adaptively perform a wide array of tasks in diverse environments with minimal human intervention.
The Role
We are seeking a motivated machine learning engineer who is adept at working with large integrated machine learning systems. Experience with robotics or similar embodied systems (such as autonomous vehicles) is advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with internal research scientists and partner laboratories at leading academic institutions to drive innovative research at scale.
- Develop, enhance, and stabilize end-to-end integrated ML pipelines for training multimodal models encompassing language, images, video, and actions.
- Train, fine-tune, and deploy robot foundation models with a strong focus on MLOps practices.
- Establish processes for integrating collaborative and open-source advancements into our internal systems.
- Design and optimize large data pipelines for foundation model training.
- Contribute significantly to the team and play a vital role in rapid progress, as measured by both internal capability development and impactful external publications.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in machine learning engineering within an AI/ML-focused organization.
- Familiarity with cutting-edge developments in behavior learning, language processing, and/or computer vision.
- Experience in training large-scale foundation models utilizing distributed training and high-performance optimization techniques.
- Extensive hands-on experience with PyTorch.
- Strong proficiency in Python and adherence to software development best practices, including unit testing, documentation, code review, continuous integration, and dependency management.
- Knowledge of data pipelines, model serving and optimization, cloud training, and dataset management.
- A demonstrated ability to adapt quickly and switch between rapid prototyping and robust implementation as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience deploying models on robotic systems.
- Experience collaborating in mixed teams of research scientists and engineers.
- Familiarity with cloud services such as Amazon EC2, S3, and/or Sagemaker.
- Experience with build tools like Bazel.
Compensation and Benefits
The compensation range for this position is competitive and varies based on individual factors such as market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. TRI offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k) eligibility, various paid time off benefits, and an annual cash bonus structure.
