Position Overview: We are seeking a Senior Networked Game Engineer to enhance our Unity development team and transition our product from an initial prototype to a fully operational platform. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the networking and multiplayer functionalities that enrich Astrocade's gaming experience. While this position focuses on Unity, we highly value engineers with a comprehensive skill set.

Our mission is to create a toolkit and platform that empowers creators to realize their visions. You will have the chance to work on a variety of projects, including multiplayer systems, optimized resource loading, and the integration of AI with the game engine. Work Arrangement:

This position follows a hybrid work model. We prioritize in-person collaboration on designated days of the week, with flexibility for exceptional circumstances.

Key Responsibilities:

This role reports to the Frontend Lead Engineer and involves close collaboration with a team of engineers.

  • Develop complex client features in Unity, working alongside backend and AI teams.
  • Engage in innovative feature development that often diverges from traditional gaming paradigms.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of best practices for multiplayer and server/client interactions.
  • Manage networking and multiplayer functionalities within Unity (Netcode, FishNet, Proton, etc.).
  • Architect state-of-the-art gameplay and game system designs.
  • Develop and integrate testing frameworks.
  • Set high standards for development practices and design within the Unity team.
  • Potential for tech leadership and management as the organization expands.

Qualifications:

  • 5-10 years of software engineering experience, with a strong background in multiplayer systems within shipped games. Additional experience in core systems, gameplay, and UI/UX is preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in Unity development.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, challenging environments where quality and speed are paramount.
  • A strong growth mindset, ready to tackle the challenges of a startup environment.
  • Proactive communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with resource loading in game engines.
  • Background in multiplayer development, whether directly in Unity or in other projects (e.g., MMO games).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with scripting languages in game engines (JavaScript/Lua).
  • Experience with software testing and unit testing methodologies.
  • 1+ years of experience with backend technologies, preferably AWS.
  • Experience in mobile application development.

Interview Process:

  1. Initial 30-minute call with a recruiter.
  2. 30-minute interview with the CTO.
  3. Take-home test estimated to take 2-4 hours.
  4. Final interview to meet the team and discuss any questions.

Compensation and Benefits:

The base salary range for this role is $120,000 to $180,000 USD annually, with actual compensation determined by location and relevant experience. Total compensation may include salary, bonuses, equity, and benefits such as unlimited vacation and healthcare.
