About New York Cares

New York Cares is dedicated to transforming enthusiasm into impactful actions, optimizing resources through collaboration, and fostering sustainable change throughout New York City. As the foremost volunteer management organization in the City, we adeptly respond to critical community challenges, ranging from food insecurity and educational disparities to emergency responses for events like 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic. As we expand our workforce, we are devoted to building a team that mirrors the diversity of the communities we serve, ensuring a workplace where every employee feels appreciated, finds a sense of belonging, and can express their true selves.

About the Talent Team

The Talent Team plays a crucial role in managing the administrative functions that ensure the employees of New York Cares are compensated, secure, and effective. Beyond routine tasks such as payroll processing, onboarding, and benefits management, the Talent Team significantly shapes the organizational culture from within. By influencing strategic decisions and sourcing exceptional professional development opportunities, the Talent Team profoundly impacts the future of New York Cares and its workforce.

Role of the Talent Specialist

New York Cares is in search of a Talent Specialist to assist in the efficient execution of administrative functions. This role involves supporting payroll processing, managing employee benefits, and collaborating with various departments on recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding initiatives. The Specialist will also engage in research to identify best practices and offer suggestions for enhancements. Reporting to the Director of Talent, the Specialist will be integral to the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate payroll operations, including data processing, reporting to payroll services, and managing check verification and distribution.
  • Act as the primary contact for benefits administration, overseeing staff needs, evaluating benefits cost-effectiveness, and developing resources such as quick reference guides.
  • Design and deliver training sessions on Talent policies, procedures, and benefits.
  • Coordinate recruitment activities with department heads and senior management, which includes crafting job descriptions, advertising vacancies, reviewing applications, organizing interviews, conducting reference checks, and preparing offer letters.
  • Conduct regular assessments of industry standards and best practices in Talent management, providing proactive recommendations for the integration of suitable practices.
  • Identify and implement operational enhancements to optimize Talent processes and documentation, such as the employee handbook.
  • Ensure adherence to federal, state, and city regulations, guidelines, and standards within specified timelines.
  • Work in a hybrid model, attending the office at least two days a week.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications, though we recognize that historically marginalized groups may be less likely to apply if they do not meet every requirement. If you believe you are a strong candidate, we encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all qualifications.

  • 2-5 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in a nonprofit, educational, or governmental setting.
  • Experience in key human resources functions, including employee relations, talent acquisition, and compensation and benefits.
  • Understanding of labor and employment laws and policies in New York State and New York City.
  • Familiarity with HR software, such as ADP, and recruitment platforms like Indeed and LinkedIn Recruiter.
  • Strong ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional discretion with sensitive information.
  • PHR certification is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, Forms, etc.).
  • Experience with project management tools, preferably Asana.
  • Commitment to the mission of New York Cares and dedication to personal and professional development.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $65,000-$72,000, commensurate with experience. Salary is one aspect of New York Cares' comprehensive compensation package, which includes generous paid leave, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits, access to a variety of e-learning courses, tax-advantaged accounts including a 403b Thrift Plan, FSA, and more.

Equal Opportunity Statement

New York Cares is proud to be an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer. We are committed to fostering a workplace where diversity, equity, and inclusion are prioritized. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, family status, marital status, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, veteran status, or any other non-merit-based or legally protected criteria.
