Position Overview:

Summary:

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is in search of a leader to oversee a team of skilled technical professionals distributed across the United States. NRAO is a renowned and diverse astronomical research institution that significantly contributes to our understanding of the cosmos. The Observatory manages various radio telescopes worldwide, including the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), which encompasses antenna sites from Hawaii to the Caribbean.

This role is for a full-time VLBA Field Group Lead within the Electronics Division at the Domenici Science Operations Center (DSOC) in Socorro, NM. The position may also be based at the Very Large Array, located 50 miles west of Socorro. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the maintenance, operations, and system upgrades of the VLBA by leading a geographically dispersed team of technical personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hands-On Leadership: Utilize your technical expertise to diagnose and guide staff in repairing telescope subsystems.
  • Problem Solving: Assess equipment performance, pinpoint areas for enhancement, document processes, and implement effective solutions.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and manage budget allocations for labor, equipment, and materials.
  • Innovative Development: Contribute to the advancement of new systems and best practices for the VLBA.
  • Team Development: Lead, motivate, and enhance your team's performance, including occasional travel to VLBA sites for hands-on collaboration.
  • Safety Compliance: Establish and adhere to NRAO and governmental safety policies and procedures.

Work Environment:

Work is primarily conducted in a research or development setting. The role requires standing, sitting, and fine hand manipulation. The candidate must be comfortable working near moving mechanical parts and electrical equipment. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching may be necessary. There may be exposure to high altitudes, outdoor weather conditions, chemicals, and electrical hazards. Some travel to other NRAO locations will be required.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, a related engineering field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additionally, the candidate should have five to seven years of relevant experience in the following areas:

  • Operations, maintenance, and design of Electronic and/or Mechanical Systems
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair complex systems
  • Experience in leading technicians and technical staff
  • Documentation of repair and maintenance activities

While not mandatory, ten or more years of experience in the aforementioned areas, along with expertise in:

  • Construction, maintenance, and repair of radio telescopes
  • RF, Analog, and Digital Electronics
  • HVAC, Cryogenics, and/or Servo Control Systems
  • Management of departmental budgets
  • Development of safety protocols and procedures

Competency Requirements:

A comprehensive understanding of Electronic and/or Mechanical Systems is essential. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary for effective collaboration with colleagues, including thorough documentation of repair and maintenance activities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required. A valid driver's license is mandatory. Familiarity with software tools for defect tracking and inventory management is preferred.
