National Radio Astronomy Observatory

Position Overview:

Role Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is on the lookout for a group leader to oversee a team of skilled technical experts stationed across the United States. NRAO stands as a prominent and diverse astronomical research institution, significantly contributing to our understanding of the cosmos. The Observatory manages an array of radio telescopes worldwide, including the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), which encompasses antenna locations from Hawaii to the Caribbean.

This role is for a full-time VLBA Field Group Lead within the Electronics Division at the Domenici Science Operations Center (DSOC) in Socorro, NM. The position may also be based at the Very Large Array, located approximately 50 miles west of Socorro. By leading a geographically dispersed team of technical personnel, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in the maintenance, operations, and implementation of system upgrades for the VLBA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hands-On Leadership: Utilize your technical expertise to diagnose and guide staff in repairing telescope subsystems.
  • Problem-Solving: Assess equipment performance, pinpoint areas for enhancement, document processes, and execute solutions.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and manage budget allocations for labor, equipment, and materials.
  • Innovative Development: Contribute to the creation of new systems and best practices for the VLBA.
  • Team Development: Lead, manage, and inspire your team to achieve optimal performance, including occasional travel to VLBA sites for hands-on collaboration.
  • Safety Compliance: Establish and adhere to NRAO and governmental safety policies and procedures.

Work Environment:

Work is generally conducted in a research or development setting, requiring standing, sitting, and fine motor skills. The role involves proximity to moving mechanical parts and electrical equipment. Occasionally, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching may be necessary. There may be instances of working at high altitudes, in precarious locations, and in various weather conditions, with potential exposure to chemicals or electrical hazards. Some travel to other NRAO locations will be necessary.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, a related engineering field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additionally, the candidate should have five to seven years of relevant experience and skills in several of the following areas:

  • Operations, maintenance, and design of Electronic and/or Mechanical Systems
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair complex systems
  • Leadership experience with technicians and technical staff
  • Documentation of repair and maintenance actions and outcomes

While not mandatory, having ten or more years of experience in the aforementioned areas, along with experience in:

  • Construction, maintenance, and/or repair of radio telescopes
  • RF, Analog, and Digital Electronics
  • HVAC, Cryogenics, and/or Servo Control Systems
  • Management of departmental budgets
  • Development of safety protocols and procedures

Competency Requirements:

A strong understanding of Electronic and/or Mechanical Systems is essential. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary for effective collaboration with colleagues, including documentation of repair and maintenance activities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required. A valid driver's license is mandatory. Familiarity with software tools for defect tracking and inventory management is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

The NRAO offers a comprehensive total rewards package for this position, subject to eligibility criteria. We are dedicated to supporting our employees and their families with a competitive compensation and benefits package that promotes overall well-being and career advancement.

Application Process:

Interested candidates should be prepared to submit their current CV/Resume and a cover letter detailing their interest and qualifications for the position.

Equal Opportunity Employer Statement:

AUI is an equal opportunity employer. Women, Minorities, Vietnam-Era Veterans, Disabled Veterans, Veterans, and Individuals with Disabilities are encouraged to apply. The NRAO is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer (M/F/D/V).
