VLBA Operations Technician I-II

National Radio Astronomy Observatory
Position Overview:
Summary of Role
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) stands as a leading research institution dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos. The Observatory manages an array of sophisticated radio telescopes located worldwide, including the renowned Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. These advanced instruments empower astronomers to investigate the universe with remarkable precision.
The NRAO is seeking an Operations Technician to become a vital member of our Operations team at the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The Operations Technician will deliver expert technical support, with minimal supervision, in the implementation of astronomical observation initiatives, basic data analysis, and correlation tasks. Training will be provided to operate the VLBA system, ensuring that data acquisition from the instruments meets high standards of quality while prioritizing the safety of personnel and equipment. Candidates with relevant experience and qualifications may be considered for a higher-level Operations Technician position, with increased responsibilities at each level. This role is classified as Safety Sensitive as detailed in the Position Requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary duties of an Operations Technician encompass, but are not limited to:
- Operating and monitoring one or more telescopes along with associated equipment.
- Initiating telescope control and preparing antennas, receivers, clocks, recording systems, and other hardware/software for operational readiness.
- Receiving observation directives from on-site or remote observers and executing observation protocols, including processing incoming observation files, verifying against published schedules, annotating files, executing observation programs, and communicating pointing results to observers.
- Assisting and accommodating requests from observers, scientific personnel, engineers, and technicians regarding basic commands for telescope controls and data analysis.
- Monitoring readings and alerts across multiple computer displays to identify unsafe equipment conditions and ensure all systems are configured and functioning correctly.
- Monitoring fringe amplitude readings and data flagging codes to assess data quality.
- Conducting system tests to evaluate values used for fine-tuning each antenna.
- Implementing protective measures for telescope equipment when weather conditions exceed operational parameters.
- Troubleshooting and resolving errors and faults as they arise.
- Making necessary personnel notifications when equipment safety is compromised or when significant issues occur.
- Maintaining a detailed observing log of failures, abnormal conditions, significant events, equipment status changes, procedural modifications, or special instructions from observers or staff.
- Documenting maintenance reports for hardware and software issues.
- Reviewing and updating existing operating procedures, and developing new procedures and schematics based on technical information provided by engineers or supervisors.
- Providing feedback on related and proposed hardware/software developments and assisting in troubleshooting identified problems.
- Reviewing operator status screens and other tools, recommending enhancements, and documenting changes as necessary.
- Acting as a liaison for array software, including testing new programs, providing feedback to programming staff, training operators in new procedures, and supplying documentation.
- Troubleshooting array system issues and collaborating with scientists, programmers, and engineers to find solutions.
- Efficiently managing and creating the correlator queue, balancing the priorities of observing and correlator functions.
- Ensuring proper handling and storage of data disc packs during and after usage.
Work Environment:
The Operations Technician will collaborate within a team that supports a 24/7 rotating shift schedule, including day, evening, and night shifts. A typical workweek may consist of 5/8 hour days or a combination of 8 and 12-hour shifts, with designated days off between shift changes. The work is conducted indoors at a console equipped with multiple computer terminals. Operators must be available for emergency call-outs and may be required to work overtime to cover vacant shifts or in emergencies until relieved.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will possess an Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from an accredited two-year college or technical school in mathematics, physics, science, or a related technical field. While not mandatory, a bachelor's degree in a related discipline is advantageous. Preferred candidates may have three or more years of experience operating an industrial-sized astronomical telescope.
Essential Skills:
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to follow established procedures and policies, manage emergencies with composure, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Attention to detail and the ability to work collaboratively, even in high-pressure situations, are crucial. Proficiency in operating computers using process control software applications, as well as familiarity with Windows and LINUX/UNIX environments, is required. Candidates should be capable of reading and interpreting documents such as schematics, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Strong organizational skills and excellent communication abilities are essential.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to hear instructions and warnings. All Operators must be available for emergency call-out and may be required to work extended shifts of up to 14 hours when necessary. Hearing acuity is required to perform work safely, and visual acuity is necessary to read and understand written/graphic/data material on a computer screen and discern colors displayed on a monitor. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Safety Sensitive:
The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen. Failure to pass the screen will disqualify the candidate from employment consideration for a period of six months from the date of the results.
