POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a Research Faculty member to contribute to our Acoustics Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. The mission of ARL/Penn State is to create innovative solutions for complex national challenges, particularly in support of the Navy, Department of Defense, and intelligence community's engineering and technology requirements. In this role, you will engage in both fundamental and applied research across various acoustic domains, including flow-induced vibrations, structural acoustics, dynamic characterization of materials and structures, fatigue analysis, and advanced data interpretation.

ARL is a recognized DoD SkillBridge partner and encourages all transitioning military personnel to apply.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Conduct modeling and experimental research in vibrations and acoustics applicable to diverse fields, including marine and aerial vehicles, as well as renewable and non-renewable energy sectors.
  • Prepare and execute experiments at ARL and various government testing facilities utilizing state-of-the-art instrumentation.
  • Identify and implement suitable numerical and analytical modeling techniques.
Additional Responsibilities for Senior Positions:
  • Draft and submit proposals for funded research initiatives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective government and industry sponsors.
  • Collaborate with fellow researchers and academic faculty at Penn State.
  • Document research findings in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals.
Faculty rank will be determined based on educational qualifications and experience.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science-related field along with two years of relevant experience. A Master's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Acoustics is preferred.

Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team, meeting project timelines.
  • Familiarity with data acquisition systems and their development.
  • Proficiency in programming within the MATLAB environment or in compiled languages such as C/C++.
Experience in one or more of the following technical areas is required:
  • Experimental acoustics and vibration measurement, including experimental design, data acquisition, and signal processing.
  • Computational acoustics methodologies such as finite element and boundary element analysis.
  • Understanding of flow excitation mechanisms, including gust response and turbulent boundary layer effects.
  • Development and characterization of acoustic materials.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Knowledge of government research programs and the proposal submission process.
  • Experience in writing white papers.
  • Technical leadership experience.
This position will be based on-site and may require occasional travel to remote locations for testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.

ARL at Penn State is a key component of one of the nation's leading research universities, serving as a center of excellence in defense science, systems, and technologies, particularly focused on naval missions and related fields.

Applicants will undergo a government security investigation and must be U.S. citizens. Employment with ARL will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.

ARL is dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, recognizing that these principles are vital to our success as a Department of Defense designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). We achieve our best outcomes when we leverage the talents of a diverse workforce.
