We are seeking a Substation Protection & Control Engineer. In this role, you will have the chance to develop designs for protection and control systems in substations serving electric utilities, covering voltage ranges from 12kV to 500kV. This area within the power systems sector provides insight into the integration of renewable energy into the electrical grid. Candidates should leverage their understanding of digital logic design and AC/DC circuits to create effective substation electrical designs.

In this position, you will gain experience in:

  • Engaging with Local Clients.
  • Collaborating with Various Utility Clients Nationwide.
  • Handling projects across distribution and transmission voltage levels.
  • Conducting Electrical Power Calculations.
  • Interacting with Other Disciplines (Substation, Telecom, Civil Structural, etc.).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designing Relay One Line Diagrams.
  • Creating Three Line AC Schematic Designs.
  • Developing DC Protection Schematic Designs.
  • Designing Panel Layouts and Wiring Schematics.
  • Formulating Bill of Materials Based on Design Specifications.
  • Performing Quality Control Checks on Wiring Designs.
  • Providing Comprehensive Project Lifecycle Support from Initial Scoping to Final Design and Implementation.
  • Offering Construction Support.
  • Applying National Electrical Safety Code Standards to Design Processes.
  • Aligning with Client Standards for Design Implementation.
  • Collaborating with Designers/Drafters to Produce Required Project Drawings.

Successful candidates must adhere to quality control measures and safe work practices while ensuring compliance with project scope, timelines, and budgets. This role will be part of a design team that includes engineers, designers, and CAD technicians.

Qualifications:

  • Mid-Level: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field with two (2+) or more years of experience in substation protection control design and/or field testing/commissioning.
  • Senior-Level: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field with four (4+) or more years of experience in substation protection control design and/or field testing/commissioning.
  • Lead-Level: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field with eight (8+) or more years of experience in substation protection control design and/or field testing/commissioning.
  • Proven experience in executing substation protection and control projects.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and clients.
  • Capability to interpret and design substation protection and control schematics.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in high-pressure situations.
  • A collaborative leader who thrives in a team-oriented environment.
  • A self-motivated individual who can work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent analytical skills and a proven track record of problem-solving.
  • High level of proficiency with computer applications.
  • Willingness to travel to project and/or client locations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • US Citizenship and eligibility to pass a DOE Background Check.
  • Engineer Intern (EI or EIT) certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License.
  • Experience conducting quality control checks on small substation protection and control design projects.
  • Familiarity with CAD tools.
  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Field testing/commissioning experience.
