Position Overview:
The Healthcare Access Coordinator plays a vital role in facilitating patient journeys through the healthcare system, starting from the initial diagnosis or referral point. This position is responsible for collecting essential demographic, employment, and insurance information required for patient registration, as well as verifying insurance coverage and benefits. The coordinator gathers necessary medical documentation for the patient's first appointment with the physician, including diagnostic procedures, operative notes, and progress reports. Acting as a bridge between patients, families, outpatient clinics, primary care providers, and additional support services, this role also involves requesting authorizations for specific services as directed by healthcare providers. The coordinator assists patients within a clinical environment and performs other related duties as necessary.

Qualifications and Experience:
A High School Diploma or GED is required, with a preference for candidates holding at least one year of college education. A minimum of one year of experience working with pediatric patients is preferred, along with at least one year of experience in a medical office front office setting or a hospital-based call center that schedules for multiple clinics or departments.

Skills and Knowledge:
Proficiency in medical terminology is essential. Understanding of age-appropriate vital sign parameters is required. Familiarity with various medical insurances and their application in a clinical setting is necessary. Comprehensive knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT codes and their relevance in HMO authorizations is also required.

Technical Skills:
Must be adept at using a variety of office equipment and tools, including LLEAP functions (scheduling, referrals, outpatient documentation), Trace fax system, and CCS PEDI system. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and LLEAP systems is essential.

Interpersonal Skills:
Effective communication skills are crucial, including telephone etiquette. The candidate should be a strong communicator, particularly over the phone, and be able to engage with individuals of varying comprehension levels, including those who may not speak English (Spanish proficiency preferred). The ability to be resourceful in obtaining necessary assistance, respond positively to changing circumstances, and maintain patient confidentiality while fostering a supportive atmosphere for patients, families, physicians, and staff from diverse departments is essential.

Cognitive Abilities:
The candidate must be able to interpret and understand patient records and various reports, including diagnostic procedures and laboratory findings. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and sound decision-making skills are necessary, along with the ability to work well under pressure, organize and prioritize tasks effectively, multi-task, recall information accurately, and pay close attention to detail. Basic math skills and the ability to assess, evaluate, and analyze data are also required. The candidate should be capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

Sensory Abilities:
The ability to distinguish colors as necessary, and to write, hear, read, and speak sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone is required. The candidate must be able to identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace and see adequately to read computer screens and written documents pertinent to the position.

Certifications:
Certification as a Medical Assistant or Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) is required, along with Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
