Description

The Medical Examiner's Office is in search of a Forensic Pathology Assistant to become part of a dedicated team of forensic pathologists. This role will provide practical experience in handling human remains and biological specimens.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct autopsies and integrate medical and investigative information to ascertain the cause and manner of death.
  • Deliver educational instruction to fellows, pathology residents, and medical students while overseeing their involvement in death investigations, autopsy procedures, and analysis of investigative data.
  • Support the medical examiner in ensuring compliance with state laws and county policies in the operations of the Medical Examiner's Office.
  • Assist in the organization and management of responses to incidents requiring medical examiner participation.
  • Provide testimony in legal proceedings and to grand juries.
  • Oversee the release of bodies and property in cases under the jurisdiction of the medical examiner.
  • Guarantee the preservation of physical and medical evidence and case documentation in accordance with professional standards and legal regulations.
  • Communicate causes of death to the families of the deceased with empathy and sensitivity.
  • Engage in research and prepare scientific presentations if desired.

Qualifications:
  • Graduation from a medical school accredited by the American Medical Association (AMA) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Possession of a valid medical license to practice in Minnesota (M.D. or D.O.) or eligibility for licensure upon employment.
  • Completion of training in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology from ACGME-accredited programs.
  • Certification in Anatomic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology at the time of hire.
  • Certification in Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology within two years of hire.
  • Good standing within the medical community.

Preferred Skills:
  • Familiarity with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Understanding of forensic pathology principles and laboratory analysis techniques.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
