About the Role

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Forensic Pathologist to join our team of medical professionals. As an Assistant Medical Examiner, you will play a critical role in investigating deaths and determining the cause and manner of death.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform autopsies and analyze medical and investigative data to determine the cause and manner of death.
  • Provide training and supervision to medical students, pathology residents, and fellows in death investigations, autopsy, and analysis of investigative data.
  • Assist the Medical Examiner in managing the performance of the functions of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office in compliance with state laws and county policies.
  • Assist in preparing, organizing, and directing the response to disasters that require medical examiner involvement.
  • Testify in court and to the grand jury.
  • Direct body and property release in cases under the medical examiner's jurisdiction.
  • Ensure preservation of physical and medical evidence and case records in accordance with professional standards and state laws and regulations.
  • Explain causes of death to relatives of the deceased and act compassionately with bereaved families.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a medical school recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Licensed as a physician to practice medicine in the state of Minnesota (M.D. or D.O.) or able to attain State of Minnesota licensure to practice upon employment.
  • Training in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology, in ACGME-accredited training programs, upon employment.
  • Certified in Anatomic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology at the time of hire.
  • Certified in Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology within two years of hire.
  • Good standing in the medical profession.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local statutes.
  • Principles and practices of forensic pathology and laboratory analysis.
  • Techniques for working with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

Working Conditions

This position is located at the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office and requires a full-time commitment. Work hours will vary between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. seven days a week, including weekday, weekend, and holiday shifts.
