POSITION SUMMARY
Under general oversight, engage in specific components of a larger engineering challenge.

The Clinical Systems Engineer in Rehabilitation will be an integral part of a diverse research and development group focused on the design and exploration of innovative Class III medical devices aimed at restoring motor and sensory capabilities in the upper extremities.

This role encompasses providing both technical and administrative assistance to clinical research initiatives, collaborating closely with various project team members, including principal investigators, clinical staff, study coordinators, regulatory experts, and engineering students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Contribute to intricate scientific and research projects within the specialization; analyze data, supervise experimental procedures, and design and develop prototypes and specialized systems. Aid lab personnel in the design, planning, and execution of research protocols and experiments. Ensure the safe and proper operation of research hardware and systems, while facilitating communication between investigators and IT services for seamless laboratory operations. Participate in patient assessments as required. (50%)
  • Oversee and maintain laboratory hardware and supply systems. Manage inventory, coordinate routine maintenance of lab equipment, and procure necessary tools and software for projects. Develop and manage databases for operational research information. (20%)
  • Utilize various methods and techniques to analyze data, identify errors, and ensure completion of projects. Collaborate with project managers and principal investigators on data management and work with IT personnel to safeguard data integrity and backup. Monitor study data quality and consult on protocol clarifications. (15%)
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory records and generating external reports. Support senior team members in preparing regular technical progress updates and ensure compliance with operational procedures and regulatory standards. Communicate effectively with project managers regarding technical issues. (10%)

CONTACTS
Department:
Regular communication with supervisors to discuss research and workflow.
University:
Occasional interactions with other departments for information sharing.
External:
Intermittent contact with external partners from medical device firms, vendors, and research institutions. Interaction with clinical research subjects and personnel.
Students:
Frequent engagement with engineering students through daily interactions and weekly lab meetings.

SUPERVISORY ROLE
This position does not entail direct supervision of staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 0 to 2 years in professional engineering roles.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Biomedical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree in engineering management or a similar discipline is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Typical laboratory setting with potential exposure to hazards. The role primarily involves computer-based tasks, requiring significant time at a desk.

When collaborating with the clinical research team, personal transportation to partner facilities may be necessary. At these locations, the engineer will collaborate with other engineers, students, and research participants.
