Job Overview

Background:
The International Rescue Committee, established in 1933, is a prominent, non-sectarian, non-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency assistance, protection, rehabilitation support, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and individuals affected by oppression or conflict. Our numerous offices across the U.S. work diligently to ensure that new arrivals receive essential resources such as food, shelter, and clothing, while also assisting refugees in achieving self-sufficiency.

Role Scope:
Enhancing skills in speaking, reading, and writing in English is vital for the success of new arrivals in Richmond. These skills broaden access to resources, job opportunities, and more. The Adult Education Intern will support the Adult Education Specialist in the organization and execution of English language training sessions for the refugees and immigrants served by IRC Richmond. Additionally, the intern will aid clients in finding community classes and receiving cultural orientation upon their arrival.

Learning Objectives:
The Adult Education Intern will:
  • Gain experience in managing classes and support services within established guidelines to provide optimal assistance to vulnerable populations.
  • Enhance critical thinking, client service, and intercultural education skills.
  • Acquire knowledge about IRC's local and global operations, as well as the services available to refugees and ORR-eligible clients in Richmond, Virginia.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist IRC staff with the enrollment, coordination, and execution of classes, including:
  • Contacting students to confirm their attendance.
  • Addressing client barriers to education, such as transportation and childcare.
  • Customizing and scaffolding instruction for individual students or small groups.
  • Engaging with local stakeholders and adult education services to connect students with suitable classes.
  • Supporting teachers in preparing educational materials for classes.
  • Coordinating with volunteers to ensure adequate coverage for adult education classes, including childcare volunteers; stepping in as needed.
  • Collecting and analyzing data to support educational initiatives and promote student success.
  • Adhering to IRC policies, particularly those concerning confidentiality and client privacy, while respecting the cultural and personal differences of clients.
  • Providing additional support as required.
Qualifications:
  • Preferred undergraduate or graduate studies in education, social work, international relations, social sciences, or a related field.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity towards vulnerable populations, with a commitment to assisting refugees in adapting to life in the U.S.
  • Experience in education or teaching, whether formal or informal.
  • Demonstrated patience, understanding, and adaptability.
  • Strong organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Effective communication abilities, particularly in a multicultural setting.
  • Interest in learning about IRC's mission, philosophy, global initiatives, and local efforts, with a willingness to comply with IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
  • Proficiency in multiple languages is preferred but not mandatory (especially Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Spanish, and Kinyarwanda).
This position is unpaid and reports to the Adult Education Specialist.
