San Francisco, California, United States PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE OF CALIFORNIA Full time
Job Overview

The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) is a respected nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization dedicated to enhancing public policy in California through independent and objective analysis. Our mission is to provide high-quality research and insights to a diverse audience focused on policy, fostering constructive dialogue and inspiring sustainable solutions for the state.

Role Purpose

As a Research Fellow, you will play a vital role in advancing PPIC's mission. This position is designed for highly skilled professionals with a passion for analytical work and a commitment to translating research into actionable knowledge that shapes California's policy landscape.

The Pre K-12 research team is seeking a research fellow who demonstrates a strong interest in bridging research with policymaking. The ideal candidate will possess substantial knowledge and enthusiasm for collaborating with a team on Pre K-12 policy issues, including resource allocation (funding, staffing, facilities), enhancing student performance (particularly for historically underrepresented groups), and promoting college readiness. The research fellow will contribute to ongoing studies and is expected to initiate new projects that align with the goals of the Pre K-12 research team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with Pre K-12 researchers to pinpoint policy research opportunities that enhance public education in California.
  • Oversee the design, execution, and analysis of research employing quantitative and/or mixed methods to address significant policy questions.
  • Conduct original research and produce various publications, including reports, policy briefs, and blogs, in partnership with research and communications teams.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, and practitioners, through presentations and outreach efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Pre K-12 research team and the development unit to identify and pursue funding opportunities for research initiatives.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Pre K-12 team and the broader PPIC research community through regular meetings, events, and conferences.
  • Mentor junior research staff to enhance their research capabilities.

Key Qualifications

Successful candidates will exhibit strong quantitative and/or mixed methods research skills, alongside excellent writing and communication abilities. They should be adept at leading the design and execution of rigorous research studies focused on Pre K-12 topics. Experience in conducting quantitative data analysis with large datasets is essential, as is proficiency in data analysis software such as STATA, R, or Python. Experience in leading mixed methods research is also advantageous.

Exceptional writing skills, demonstrated through previous publications, are crucial; the ability to write for diverse audiences, including policymakers and practitioners, is preferred. Candidates must possess strong interpersonal skills to facilitate collaboration with colleagues across research, communications, and development. Organizational skills are necessary to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.

Familiarity with the California Pre K-12 landscape, including school finance, staffing, facilities, accountability, and special populations (e.g., English Learners, students with disabilities, students of color), is preferred. A doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in economics, public policy, education, sociology, or a related field is preferred. We welcome applicants at early career stages, including recent doctoral graduates.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience. In addition to salary, PPIC offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their dependents, a retirement plan contribution, paid holidays, and generous paid time off.

Diversity and Inclusion

PPIC values the diverse backgrounds and experiences of its research staff. We are committed to building a team that reflects the variety of perspectives and skills found in California. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
