San Francisco, California, United States PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE OF CALIFORNIA Full time
Job Overview

The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) is a respected nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing public policy in California through impartial and thorough research. Our commitment lies in delivering high-quality analysis to a diverse audience focused on policy, fostering constructive dialogue, and inspiring sustainable solutions across the state.

Role Purpose

As a Research Fellow, you will play a crucial role in advancing PPIC's mission. This position is ideal for individuals with robust analytical capabilities and a keen interest in translating research into actionable insights that shape California's educational policies.

The Pre K-12 research team is seeking a Research Fellow who demonstrates a profound interest in bridging research with policy-making. The ideal candidate will possess substantial knowledge and a collaborative spirit to work alongside a team on critical Pre K-12 policy issues, such as resource allocation (funding, staffing, facilities), enhancing student achievement (particularly for historically underrepresented groups), and promoting college readiness. This role involves contributing to ongoing research initiatives and developing new projects to further the objectives of the Pre K-12 research team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with fellow researchers to pinpoint policy research opportunities that can enhance public education in California.
  • Oversee the design, execution, and analysis of research projects utilizing quantitative and/or mixed methods to address significant policy questions.
  • Conduct original research and generate publications, including reports, policy briefs, and blogs, in partnership with research and communications teams.
  • Establish and nurture professional relationships with stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, and practitioners, through presentations and outreach efforts.
  • Work alongside the development team to identify and pursue grant opportunities for research projects.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Pre K-12 team and the broader PPIC research community through meetings, events, and conferences.
  • Mentor junior research staff to enhance their research skills.

Essential Qualifications

Successful candidates will exhibit exceptional quantitative and/or mixed methods research skills, along with strong writing and communication abilities. The capacity to lead the design and execution of rigorous research studies on Pre K-12 topics is essential. Experience in quantitative data analysis using large datasets is required, as is proficiency in data analysis software such as STATA, R, or Python. Experience in leading mixed methods research is also advantageous.

Excellent writing skills, demonstrated through previous publications, are crucial; the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including policymakers and practitioners, is preferred. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for collaboration with colleagues across various departments, as well as organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.

Familiarity with the California Pre K-12 landscape, including school finance, staffing, and accountability, is preferred. A doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in economics, public policy, education, sociology, or a related field is preferred. We welcome applicants at early career stages, including recent doctoral graduates.

Application Process

Interested candidates should submit an application letter, resume, writing samples tailored for a policy audience, and contact information for three references. References will only be contacted with prior approval.

Work Environment

This position offers a hybrid work environment. The compensation package includes a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement contributions, paid holidays, and generous PTO.

Diversity Commitment

PPIC values diversity and is an Equal Opportunity Employer, committed to building a team that reflects the varied backgrounds and perspectives of California. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
