Policy Research Associate

San Francisco, California, United States PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE OF CALIFORNIA Full time
Position Overview

The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) is a respected nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing public policy in California through rigorous, unbiased research. Our mission is to provide insightful analysis and foster constructive dialogue that leads to sustainable policy solutions across the state.

Role Objective

As a Research Fellow, you will play a crucial role in advancing PPIC's mission. This position is designed for individuals with exceptional analytical capabilities and a strong commitment to translating research into actionable insights that influence policymaking in California.

The focus of the Pre K-12 research team is to engage a research fellow who demonstrates a keen interest in linking empirical research with policy development. The ideal candidate will possess substantial knowledge and enthusiasm for collaborating with a team on critical Pre K-12 policy issues, such as resource allocation (funding, staffing, facilities), enhancing student performance (particularly for historically underrepresented groups), and promoting college readiness. The research fellow will contribute to ongoing studies and is expected to initiate new projects that further the objectives of the Pre K-12 research team.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work alongside Pre K-12 researchers to pinpoint research opportunities that can enhance public education in California.
  • Oversee the design, execution, and analysis of research projects utilizing quantitative and/or mixed methods to address significant policy questions.
  • Conduct original research and produce various publications, including reports, policy briefs, and blogs, in collaboration with research and communications teams.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, and practitioners, through presentations and outreach efforts.
  • Collaborate with the research team and development staff to identify and pursue funding opportunities for research initiatives.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Pre K-12 team and the broader PPIC research community through meetings, events, and conferences.
  • Mentor junior research staff to enhance their research capabilities.

Essential Qualifications

Successful candidates will exhibit strong quantitative and/or mixed methods research skills, along with excellent writing and communication abilities. The capacity to lead the design and execution of rigorous research studies using descriptive and quasi-experimental designs for Pre K-12 topics is essential. Experience in quantitative data analysis with large datasets is required, as is proficiency in data analysis software such as STATA, R, or Python. Familiarity with mixed methods research is also advantageous.

Exceptional writing skills, demonstrated through previous publications, are crucial; the ability to tailor communication for diverse audiences, including policymakers and practitioners, is preferred. Candidates must possess strong interpersonal skills to facilitate collaboration across various teams, along with organizational abilities to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.

Preferred qualifications include familiarity with the California Pre K-12 landscape, including school finance, staffing, accountability, and special populations. A doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in a relevant field such as economics, public policy, education, or sociology is preferred. We encourage early-career applicants, including recent doctoral graduates, to apply.

Commitment to Diversity

PPIC values the diverse backgrounds and experiences of its research staff. We seek candidates who embody excellence, diversity of thought, and alignment with our mission and values.

Application Process

Interested candidates should submit an application letter, resume, writing samples aimed at a policy audience, and contact information for three references. References will only be contacted with prior approval from the applicant. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is competitive and will be determined based on various factors, including experience and qualifications. In addition to salary, PPIC offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement contributions, paid holidays, and generous paid time off.

Equal Opportunity Employer

PPIC is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to building a diverse team that reflects the backgrounds and perspectives of California. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals.
